The Big DONT’s of Public Speaking
—
Although knowing good speech theory is awesome to help your performance, I assure you that just getting rid of these bad habits can be equally rewarding. Public Speaking makes us nervous, making us less aware of what we’re doing; know what to avoid so that it’ll be easier to keep an eye out for it:
.
1. Avoid distracting mannerism and fidgeting. That means no pacing, shaking, twisting, stepping of the feet or wringing of the hands. Don’t play with your clothes, your cheat sheet or your hair.
.
2. If it’s a class presentation, and unless it’s required, do not start with “Good morning [audience]”. It’s boring, repetitive and offers a poor transition into the speech. Jump directly into engaging your audience. .
3. Don’t avoid eye contact. Yes, staring at the audience can be very intimidating but you lose a lot of attention and interest if you look towards the floor. Looking to the back of the room or to the spot in between a person’s eyebrows has the same effect as making eye contact and isn’t as scary.
.
4. No info-dumping. Your audience can read, don’t vomit pre-written info back to them. Explain, exemplify, inspire, test, challenge your audience with your performance. Make your speech dynamic and interactive. They need to learn something from YOU, not only your cold, concrete content.
.
5. Don’t forget to think about your message. What is your audience taking away from your speech? What are they learning? Why should they listen to you? Create a message for your audience that excites you and that you believe in, otherwise you don’t stand a chance of making anyone else do so.
.
What are your big no-no’s when it comes to public speaking?

EMERGENCY TIPS FOR PUBLIC SPEAKING
.
I’ve been doing public speaking for years and years now and there hasn’t been 1 time I wasn’t gut-wrenching, heart-racing nervous. It happens to everyone and that feeling never really goes away, we just learn to ride the wave instead of being afraid of it.
.
1. Power Posing/Power Sphere.
Feet shoulder-width apart, hands over hips, shoulders rolled back and head held high. Do this from 3 to 5 minutes before going on stage. It will give you the confidence you need to rock that presentation. The power sphere is for during your presentation, it’s the same except you keep your arms raised between your navel and your eyebrows at all times.
.
2. Alternate your pitch and your tone.
Think of the line of your voice as a heartbeat, if it’s flat... you’re dead.
.
3. Do not memorize your speech.
It won’t work. You will look robotic and boring, and you won’t be able to adapt yourself to your audience. Have a cheat sheet or PowerPoint with your main ideas and develop them as you go —no need to write them down, they’re yours!
.
4. Go slow.
As your heartbeat accelerates you will speak faster without noticing, be conscious of this and combat it by purposely going slowly and enunciating each word clearly.
.
5. Make contact with your audience.
Engage them to enthrall them. Don’t ignore them.
.
Public Speaking is truly a complex art but these 5 tips are meant to get you out of a jam.
Next week I’ll bring you the biggest DON’Ts of Public Speaking so be sure to be looking out for those!

Kuasai materinya. Buat poin-poin yang mampu anda jelaskan pada saat nanti berada di "panggung". Terutama jika ada hal baru, bila perlu pelajari secara mendalam...minimal sehari sebelumnya. Cari referensi atau bertanya kepada orang lain.

♀️DO NOT be limited by the chains of your comfort zone. Break the link - go out and try sh*t, like seriously. Saying "YES" can result in the creation of your most precious and memorable moments (through several adversities of course - they're inevitable, that's a promise).

I had to give a small presentation last week at law school and although I was still nervous I got myself up there and tried to channel some of the techniques suggested in this book. It didn’t go perfectly but it went okay and I was proud of myself for doing it.What are some of your biggest fears? And what are your tips for speaking in front of others?

And FYI this book is amazing, original and empowering. Each chapter takes a different female speaker and analyses what makes them good at it. In this way, a whole variety of speakers are considered and so you can definitely take something away to apply to yourself - I had to start tabbing pages as you can see! Speakers looked at include Oprah, Virginia Woolf, J K Rowling and Michelle Obama. 4/5 stars ✨ .
