If you know Dachshunds, you’ll know they’re pretty susceptible to separation anxiety so we did a lot of reading to nip it in the bud. ⠀•⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ We chose not to crate train Milo and instead put out pee pads at night. From night 1 we set a routine telling him to ‘go to bed’, giving him a treat, and leaving the room. Then, no matter how much they cry do NOT go back in, they’ll just learn crying will get them what they want ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀•⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We were lucky that Milo only cried for 15/20 minutes before settling down and the next night he only cried for 5. We could then begin to work on the day to day separation ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀•⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ For this we built it up second by second. To do this, you can start by leaving the room for 10 seconds and going straight back in (the second any crying stops). You then build it up to 5, then 10 minutes and so on.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀•⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Once he was ready to be left alone properly we kept with the same routine of ‘go to bed’, giving a treat and leaving. It is important to not make leaving or getting home a big deal. If you make it a big deal, they’ll think it’s a big deal too. It’s also important that if they do something naughty while you’re out, NEVER punish on your return. They won’t make the association with what they’ve wrong, but instead being told off for your return. This will just increase anxiety when you leave. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ •⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ We now have no problem when leaving Milo at home, provided we stick with routine. As long as you don’t teach crying gets them anything, and that leaving is bad they’ll soon pick up on this.
