Congrats!!! via @purpleprincess_429 6 years #seizurefree, baby!! Eternally grateful to have gone from counting hours, days, weeks, months between #seizures, to celebrating yearly #milestones! 11 years is the number to beat; more than half way there!! Epilepsy is a disorder in which nerve cell activity in the brain is disturbed, causing seizures. It's estimated that about 65 million people worldwide have epilepsy. Cassidy Megan, a nine-year-old from Canada, founded Purple Day in 2008.

When I was 12 years old, I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. It’s a chronic inflammatory disease that causes severe scarring/inflammation throughout your body. Whenever Crohns decides to “flare up”, it attacks my small intestine by making it swell to the point of completely closing shut and resulting with a week in the hospital.. It is agonizingly painful and leaves me living off IV steroids and pain meds. All my life I’ve had to deal with excruciating abdominal pain, fluctuating weight loss, vomiting, extreme fatigue, etc. I have to constantly be restricting myself from so many things in hopes that I don’t get one of these flares and end right back up in the hospital. Stress and food being the biggest triggers.

These past 2 1/2 years has been hospital visit after hospital visit.. On Thursday, I decided to have surgery to have a section of my SI removed in hopes that that can keep my Crohns under control. They cut out 30cm of severely damaged intestine, reattached the ends, and put me on a NG tube to pump my stomach for a few days while I heal. (S/O to my skilled surgeon, Dr. Stevenson, and Chandler Regional Medical Center for being so wonderful)

I’ve never had surgery in my life, better yet major abdominal surgery, so this was really hard for me. I realized I can’t keep living in fear of Crohns and letting time go by while I sit here and feel sorry for myself. Arie can’t learn everything he needs to know from his mama if I’m hiding away at a hospital every week. I now have 4 incisions across my abdomen and even though that’s really hard for me to look at..They will be a constant reminder that I won’t let any illness stop me from living my life.

I pray this surgery is successful and I can go home to my beautiful son and loving fiancé. Anybody out there who has an autoimmune disease and suffers in silence like myself, I’m here for you and will always lend an ear. Let’s learn to LOVE our flaws instead of being ashamed of them. It’s not easy for me to share something like this about myself that’s so personal and imperfect but there’s no denying that’s it’s just part of who I am. Crohns made me the strong person I am today and for that, I am grateful.
