: Gozauri is a nod to the ancient large-sized clay vessel used to transport and serve wine. Originated in Kakheti, the eastern part of Georgia The Gozauri Saperavi is aged is steel tank and shows bright red fruit and a stony minerality.

: Shilda Winery “Mukuzani” a micro-zone in Kakheti known for quality Saperavi. This wine is aged in French oak and has a rustic composition with soil driven notes balanced by sweet barrel spices.

: Velistikhes Veranda Saperavi aged in Qvevri, handmade clay vessel buried underground to keep the temperature low. The grapes are crushed into the Qvevri and left to ferment for roughly six months.
We tasted two absolutely cracking wines this weekend. Avondale was the first winery in SA to make wines using a Qvevri (no that’s not a typo). I first came across these while planning for a yet to be undertaken trip to Georgia. Georgia is one of the oldest wine making regions in the world and traditionally made wine in clay pots known as Qvevri. The guys from Avondale went to Georgia and returned with this knowledge. The results are absolutely incredible.
The Qvevri Chenin is unfiltered and is bit cloudy but don’t let that deter you. This is such a delicious wine. I got hints of melon and pears on the nose, without being in your face fruity. This is a skin contact Chenin and has an amazing texture and great balance. A serious Chenin this one!
The The Qvevri Grenache Syrah Mourvèdre has the most amazing nose of red fruit and cinnamon spice with a hint of earthiness. This wine is so accessible and inviting but so complex. It keeps changing and forces you to keep coming back for more. Scrumptious is how I would describe this one! Love it!

It's been 7 months that I have not been to Georgia and only time I can taste Georgian wine in Hungary is when a friend brings a bottle, thank you @tolia_qupo for it!
I was missing good Qvevri wine so much. This varietal amber wine made from Tsolikouri was so well balanced, with very complex nose and long finish. You could find floral aromas along with stone fruit and some unique earthy character from Qvevri. This wine from western Georgia has well integrated tannins and acidity balancing its complex fruitiness on palate. Would I drink it again? definitely, yes.
Looking forward to my visit to Georgia in August and tasting as many new wines as possible.

This is Fermented in stainless steel for 3 weeks, then taken off the skins and finished ageing in Amphorae: this helps the softening of the tannins and encourages the aromatic.

Amphorae use dates back to original and traditional winemaking, thought to originate from Georgia. It is thought to be an incredible vessel that allows the wine to naturally mix with its lees due to airflow (natural batonnage), can clarify wine naturally and if using skins, actually acts as a protector! It's so exciting to see these vessels being used again in winemaking.

Ortega is a white grape variety that is a cross between Müller-Thurgau and Siegerrebe. It's grows well in England as it ripens early and is not susceptible to the frost. It often tastes like muscat and peach. .
❇️Loads of sediment in the glass, a plate golden colour.
❇️A super pretty and aromatic nose - it literally smells like Shloer the adult party drink (very peachy)
❇️Palate is dry with lovely stone fruits, white peach and a hint of grapefruit. Its light and fresh but there are surprising tannins... A soft grippines - the bitterness of overbrewed tea leaves. The palate is quite umami and savoury like.

What is really cool to realize in the experience here is, that it is a very exciting, and a quite and unique fact, to drink a Qvevri wine from the northern slopes of the Etna, Sicily, which is bringing the characteristics of Volcanic terroir and Georgian style Qvevri winemaking together.

A structured and expressive wine with ripe red and black fruit, raisins, a bit of warm spices like cinnamon and cloves with some binding-herbs where remotely sometimes star anise / eucalyptus-like scents play the mind. All driven on subtitle mineral earthiness given by mount Etna. And with just the right dose of classy yeasty funk and a tiny fizz.

It is nice to know they are only 5 km away from Frank Cornelissen. If you look on Google Maps satellite view, you can see that the two villages are built in between old lava streams from Etna, and I assume the vineyards will not be far away.

Official tech facts:
" Organically grown Nerello Mascalese grapes, from 60 to 100 year old bush vines, located at altitudes of 800 to 900 metres, on the northern face of Mt Etna were hand harvested along with small quantities of Nerello Cappuccio and Alicante (5% total). ▫️

The grapes were destemmed by hand into several Georgian qvevris which have been buried underground.
▫️
Fermentation was conducted by indigenous yeasts. Upon completion the qvevris were closed and left to macerate for different lengths of time depending on the rate of tannin extraction and the quality of the grape skins. ▫️

On average the time on skins was two months. After the maceration period, the new wine from the three qvevris and their pressings were blended and returned to one large qvevri, until bottling in May 2016. The wine was bottled without fining or filtration. "
