The SHIFT Technology Symposium was a great experience! So glad they brought me back up here for it. My Keynote was titled, “But what can students really accomplish?”. That said, it felt much more like, “But what can a COMMUNITY really accomplish?”. These teachers are fantastic future-makers and our students are lucky. Presenting in a community I have worked in for so long was a fun and different joy, as the audience was filled with stories that involved my students in projects.
Here is the short version of one of those stories, Heather at Loleta Elementary reminded me that she attended my small breakout group last year at a STEAM conference. She joined the breakout group on a whim. I presented on student projects and on my rainwater book (To Catch the Rain). Then we had the participants break into small teams to do a quick design with markers and flipchart paper. Heather, put up her hand and said she wanted to design her school. She was all, “I could do that. We could do that at our school.” A team quickly formed with her and they drew up plans for her school—Rainwater catchment, orchard, garden, and pumpkin patch, etc.
Now, they have all of that! Her school is 97% free or assisted lunch program and her rainwater orchard, community garden, and educational pumpkin patch are essential parts of the students’ and community members’ day.
I hope I did her story justice and hope, even more, to record it from her someday.
My favorite part of her story is that this wasn’t her life passion and expertise. She is a great teacher and community member, and just saw the opportunity and thought, “yeah, I can do that.” (photo credit Rosie Slentz)
