I know I’ve said it a million times already, but I still get such a great buzz from teaching women, and it’s an even greater honour to get them interested in tech diving. Recreational diving might be evening up on the scales, but in tech there is a still major imbalance between males and females. ⁣ I’ve said it before, and I will say it again folks, women are just as equally capable of all types of scuba diving! Don’t let anything dissuade you from trying such an exciting and rewarding experience! You can easily walk into your local technical dive centre and find out more about whichever type of diving they offer, and I promise you they’ll be happy to see you! ⁣ I hope to get more women next year, but for today I’m just happy that I got one more of us into the water completely smashing buoyancy control on a rebreather ⁣ ⁣ #padiwomensdiveday ‍♀️⁣

Have you ever stopped to enjoy the view and suddenly realised how beautiful the world is? Of course we all know that our planet is beautiful, and if you’re like me then you enjoy a little reminder from Attenborough every now and again, but when do we really stop ourselves and take a good old gaze? ⁣ ⁣ Most of the time I find myself rummaging-through-my-bag-to-find-my-phone-to-take-a-photo-of-something-I-think-might-look-amazing-on-an-Instagram-post... and completely miss the irony of the situation. ⁣ ⁣ Today I went on a dolphin tour and although I spent the majority of the encounter filming from the bow, I managed to slide in the water and swim with them without once thinking about the GoPro I had left onboard. Only later did I realise that I hadn’t filmed the incredible experience, whilst simultaneously realising that it might have been a bit less incredible had I been experiencing it from behind a lens. ⁣ ⁣ So what I’m trying to say is, the world is beautiful. Let’s just look at it every once in a while. ⁣ ⁣

It’s 3 am. I’m in full tactical dive gear. Wetsuit, fins, knife, compass, tac board, utility belt, hood, mask, gloves. Time for the Draeger. As I hang the rebreather around my neck, I wish that it was a simple backpack oxygen tank, not a 30 lb temperamental rig that straps onto my chest. • I also wish I was about to SCUBA dive in the Bahamas with my wife. But this is Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training, and I am about to spend 4 hours deep underwater, learning how to locate and destroy an enemy target. • The beauty of the Draeger is the scrubber unit that turns the CO2 laden air you breathe out back into oxygen. Your rig doesn’t release any CO2 bubbles that give away your underwater presence. Your air supply lasts longer than an open circuit rig. • Elegant, yes. But the actual experience is like breathing out of a bag. You never feel like you are getting quite enough air. Your ears ache from O2 bubbles getting trapped in your middle ear. It takes hours to prep your rig. Mistakes can be deadly. • I blow out as much air as I can, insert the mouthpiece, and feel the Draeger release oxygen as it starts to inflate. 2 minutes to make sure everything is working, and we slide into the black water. • Another week in BUD/S hell. • Takeaway: You don’t have to like it.
