I know I talk about this a lot, but I can’t express how much of an ongoing journey it is to not push my body to extremes. I started obsessing over exercise in college and since then it has been a daily battle to redefine health for myself. I’ve spent so much time focused on getting a good workout or sweat going that I began neglecting the true needs of my body. Yoga is so much more than the physical practice, getting there takes time (I’m still on that journey). But if you spend every day stressing about how to get the physical practice in, it becomes more difficult to reach the space beyond the physical. This is me, after a home practice of yin yoga. No sweat, no strength training, but feeling so alive and at home in myself. Some days are definitely better than others. I’m just over here trying to remind myself that a practice means more than peaks—it means valleys and plateaus and even dead stops. Leave space for your definition of “fitness” to be complex, surprising, and to be truly yours.
I’ve always been quite confortable with hips opening. I would say I’ve always considered this body part as my confort zone. Obviously, the more I work on second chakra, the more I feel this is also “my” energetic area: in body geography, this is the place connected with the topics I daily work on, such as self-discovery, identity exploration, inner self inquiries, inconscious understanding.
Knowing that my star sign and my star ascendent (scorpio & scorpio) are connected with this body part is a kind of magical coincidence. In a symbolic and archetypic sense, scorpio is the sign of hips and Swadisthana, governing the domains of generation, sexuality, life, death and rebirth. Scorpio is the sign dealing with the mystery of what you can’t see with physical eyes, and hips is the place where this mystery is buried.

The relation between strength and flexibility, openness and self protection, enthousiasm and melancholy, contraction and release, ha and tha has always been one of my hardest struggles. I used to be very stiff and then I became hyperextended, I used to be too strong and then I became too delicate, I used to have a closed back and then the lombar area became too open. According to my karmic condition I find it very easy to jump from one extreme to the other; on the contrary, It’s such a hard thing for me to stay in the shades of gray. I don’t believe this tendency is ever going to change radically, but Hatha Yoga and buddhism are teaching me how to surf these polarities in the best way. First of all I don’t identify with them anymore; I just look at myself from the outside and accept to be in the place where I stand, knowing it’s just a temporary condition. Second, I take advantage of each condition to seek for the opposite hidden inside of it. When I work on flexibility I seek for strength, when I’m in contraction I seek for traces of release, when I’m feeling open I focus on protection, when I’m suffering I seek for compassion. The more I practice like this, the more I understand I’m not searching for anything “far away” from what I’m living in the very moment: everything is always present. Life is a matter of pulse, and pulse is a matter of compresence. .

One of the most interesting things I’ve been studying in these days concerns the concept of being “advanced” in asana practice. This idea is absolutely non yogic, since it implies a linear conception of time. Our body, according to Yoga, changes with every breath, so that any time we unroll the mat we are different. How can today be compared to tomorrow, if we’re always a brand new body? Yoga is made of an endless present, every practice is always our first one, our body is always a beginner, because it’s never the same as yesterday. We shouldn’t think in terms of “let me see if my body is improving”, but rather in terms of “let me discover which body I’m in today”. .

I was 16 years old when I went to my first yoga class.
I had just moved to another city, to live alone for the first time. Yoga wasn’t that popular at the time.
I developed my passion for yoga right after the first class, i felt such a deep connection with the practice.
