According to a new study (Thank you Thrive Global), best to stop asking the youth “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Instead maybe ask for something that provides room for creativity and encourages out-of-the-box thinking like “What problems do you want to solve?” “Who do you admire and why?” - we aren’t defined by the work we do alone, there’s a whole range of layers and peeling their thoughts is fun. May is mental health awareness month. And with it comes this desperately disheartening statistic: 1 in 6 children between 2 & 8 years old has a mental, developmental or behavioural disorder (USA). Like PANs pandas & Autism (ASD) this figure seems to have been on the rise for decades. Unfortunately the whole set-up of our western world is inimical to mental health in children. From the toxicity of western living, processed foods, pesticides, polluted water & air and WiFi; to (again) processed foods offering zero nutritional value, no immune system or nervous system support; to more sedentary lifestyles; to stressful school systems & exam pressures; to a whole world of inventions that can keep children from their sleep; to a world where hyperstimulation creates anxiety and an inability to focus. This is a real wake up call! ⚡️ However, despite that doom & gloom many of the answers are simple & achievable & some more or less free Ensuring your child has a balanced diet tilted towards plant-based with a beautiful rainbow of colours, real food from the ground, with a focus on anti-inflammatory not pro-inflammatory foods can make a difference! Getting your child out in nature regularly can make a difference! Restricting access to technology & internet & not allowing it in the bedroom can make a difference! And trying to limit the toxic exposures of your child (whose system may be already overwhelmed coping with the many thousands of chemicals we are exposed to on a daily basis that did not exist 50 years ago!) can make a difference! Any way you can encourage your child to run & dance & jump rather than be glued to a screen (she says glued to a screen) can make a difference! The world has developed in a way that does not support us physically or mentally. But we do not have to accept that. The more we understand that our health and that of our children is in our own hands, and that we can work with our genotype using all of the above, and avoid certain illnesses our genes are coded for the better! Personally I think it is empowering & exciting to be in charge of our health. ⚡️No doctor will ever care about your health as much as you do! ⚡

Kidzania is not your run-of-the-mill children’s theme park. It is an exciting immersive career role-playing experience that mimics real life! . We took our kids to Kidzania KL a few days ago and were blown away by just how beneficial it was for their development. It is a kid-sized world filled with all the things we adults see and do everyday. . You begin by purchasing tickets to board an AirAsia flight to Kidzania. Once you “arrive" you begin your journey through the bustling city with 50 kidZos (the official currency of Kidzania). This isn’t just kids' monopoly money. You can really earn and spend your kidZos on actual items and experiences like a makeover or a meal. . They encounter real-life occupations in a fun and engaging learning environment! It’s an unschoolers dream! . The children are first encouraged to explore the city, find a job, and begin working. Children are entirely free to go and do as they wish. Parents are welcome to observe but not interfere. . Want to drive a car? You’ll first need to earn a driver's license and buy car insurance. Want to walk the runway in a real fashion show? You’ll first need to go learn and practice with a fashion icon. . As you approach a location in the city, you can enter either as a paying customer or an employee. From courier to surgeon, from firefighter to magician, the children are free to learn about and become what they want. It's fun hard work! . In Kidzania, children learn to be independent, understand the values of teamwork, and even develop real life skills (like financial planning at their very own bank). . Not only was our time at Kidzania an incredible learning experience, but the staff was warm, kind, and attentive. Am I the only one out here who’s obsessed with Rethinking Schools? This book has been my constant companion as I bookend my CalTPA work with a bit of reading to help guide and inspire my English unit plan I’m crafting for my methods class. If you’ve been viewing my IG stories, this is the book where I have been pulling those excerpts from. I know my primary credential is social science but the many ideas and entry points for students to engage in meaningful ways through English curriculum have my creative juices flowing! It’s so helpful when a text like this one is not only helpful in providing thorough unit plans, but thoughtful commentary on a plethora of topics, like tracked classes in schools. I’m so glad that I decided to pursue a dual credential because of what English curriculum can offer students, which is slightly different than a history course. I would be over the moon if I could teach either one! They are similar in so many ways. This book is useful regardless of what subject you teach and I think it’s an English and Social Science teacher essential. Like Linda Christensen writes, I want students to read the world. When asked how do you home educate little children, I am always left puzzled about what to say.⁣ .⁣ My immediate response would be, we just live life. Children learn by living life.⁣ .⁣ My response is still the same. There’s one thing I add though regarding nurturing young aspiring writers: I trust children and let them in.⁣ .⁣ I share 7 ways to do this in my podcast. They are:⁣ ⁣ 1.
