Thailand was the most breathtaking place I’ve ever been to. The people were very pleasant and the culture was intriguing. I’m blessed with being able to travel to places such as this. With saying that, traveling to foreign areas is quite difficult given my vision. It reminds me that things aren’t easy for me, they never have been and I don’t think they ever will be. That’s why I work my ass off, never give up and avoid dark paths. Every now and again I walk away from the promises I’ve made to myself but I always am able to pull myself out of it. My vision doesn’t define me. It does piss me off, make me cry and sometimes even leaves me with bruises but it has made me so much stronger than anyone ever thought I’d be. My vision may be low but the views I saw on this trip will be ingrained in me for a lifetime. Thailand, I will definitely be returning to you. #thailand #retinitispigmentosa #retinitispigmentosaawareness #phiphiisland

I used to wonder if I would ever meet someone who could love and accept me along with my disability. In the past, I’ve used my white cane on dates and could sense the discomfort from the other person. One guy asked me, as we pulled up to a store, “Do you HAVE to bring the cane in with you?” And when I said yes - he asked me to wait in his car! ‍♂️ But when I met Matthew, I didn’t sense an ounce of judgment or hesitation. In fact, he was fascinated by my eye disease and wanted to learn everything about it. He wanted to know exactly what I could and couldn’t see, and made every accommodation possible ❤️ When we got a new car together, he picked a white one because he knew I would have a better chance of seeing it at dusk. When we shopped around for a new gym, he rejected three of them because their machines didn’t contrast enough with their carpets and he knew I could trip. When he brought home a new mug last week, he made sure it was black so it would stand out against our white countertops (lessening my chance of knocking it over.) And I’ll never forget the very first time he told me he loved me. I was worried about the future of our relationship, and whether he could handle the reality of my blindness. He turned to me, held my hands, and said “It doesn’t matter if you’re blind or sighted, I will always love you, Paul.” Unlike that terrible date years ago, Matthew insists I use my cane even when I tell him I’d rather wait in the car. Matthew urges me not to withdraw, and to wear my disability with pride If you’re struggling to accept your own disability (or any aspect of your life that gets you down) I hope my story offers some encouragement. When you love and believe in yourself, you open the door for others to do the same ❤️ #sundaymotivation #retinitispigmentosa #rp #visuallyimpaired #legallyblind

I’ve always believed you can feel chemistry with someone in five minutes or less. You could argue it’s instantaneous. Some people call it a “spark”, and in college my friends and I named it “the vibe.” But whatever you want to call it, you know the feeling. And there’s a very specific intensity when you feel it being returned…. When the other person is clearly “vibing” you back. The day I met Matthew, I felt it the moment he smiled at me for the first time There was something different about him; an energy I had never felt before. At the risk of sounding cheesy, Matthew brightened the room when he walked into it ⭐️ After our first date I wrote in my journal: “I feel like I’m falling, my stomach is in a funny knot, but I like it!” Which humorously sums up that feeling of early infatuation — but it also felt like more than that I continued, “I’ve only spent one day with him, but in those hours my imagination allowed me to picture a lifetime.” I remember being a little scared to write that down, wondering if I was slightly delirious But I read that now, three years later, and realize something…whether you call it chemistry, a spark, or “the vibe”: When you know, you know. And for the record, he still brightens the room when he walks in ⭐️ #loveatfirstbite #retinitispigmentosa

I have a disability, and that’s ok. I’ve lost 85% of my vision, I’m going blind, and I’ve accepted it. The word “disabled” is not a negative one to me. In fact, I find it very empowering Perhaps it’s related to the fact that I grew up being called “gay” in such a negative way…and now I wear that word with pride ️‍ In many ways I feel similarly about my disability: I have a genetic disease, so “I was born this way!” When I met my partner, Matthew, I told him everything about my disease and I was fully prepared for him to say “you seem like a nice guy, but I can’t handle that!” I wouldn’t have even begrudged him; I get it. But you know something? Matthew didn’t even blink He wanted to know everything about my disability and how he could make life easier for me. Even if it meant giving me free piggyback rides whenever I asked! But Matthew also did something that no one else ever did; he pushed me to try harder. I grew up around people who often said “Don’t worry, Paul, I’ll do that for you” or “Paul can’t do that - don’t make him try!” And as a result a part of my independence was lost. But Matthew saw my potential and said “You can anything…and if you fall, I’ll be right here to catch you.” And as a result, he’s helped me in ways I never considered possible. Having a disability comes with many physical challenges, but there’s a psychological challenge we talk about far less. Yes, I have a disability…but it doesn’t mean I’m unable to do incredible things! #retinitispigmentosa #rp #ffb #disabilityawareness #differentlyabled #motivation

When I was 16 years old I was told by doctors that I would likely be blind by 40. The first thing my family and I wanted to know was, could this disease be treated? And unfortunately the answer was “No, but there’s hope.” In the years since my diagnosis with Retinitis Pigmentosa, I have lost 85% of my vision but I’ve held onto that hope. I’ll be honest, sometimes it really sucks to have this disease. I can’t drive, I bump into things, I make embarrassing mistakes, I’ve never seen the stars, I’m totally lost in dim restaurants and movie theaters, and hardest of all…it’s getting much more difficult to paint and draw. So, yeah, that’s the truth - and I wont sugarcoat any of it. BUT (there’s always a but!) I also feel extremely LUCKY to have this disease. I know, you must think I’m crazy - but it’s true, and I’ll tell you why. Facing blindness has made me appreciate what I CAN see, and work twice as hard to chase my dreams. I also recognize that it’s part of my STORY, and what gives me a unique perspective in this world. I can’t drive; but I save a lot of money! I make embarrassing mistakes; but they often make the funniest stories I’ve never seen the stars; but I can still see the moon I’m lost in restaurants and theaters; but it just means I get to hold someone’s hand It’s getting harder to paint and draw; but technology provides me with many tools. I still have tremendous hope for the future: Hope that a treatment and a cure will be found (this day is coming!) But I wouldn’t trade my story for the world If you are struggling with a disability or hardship of any kind, remember this: Your story is everything, and your disadvantage doesn’t diminish you; it’s your opportunity to shine! #retinitispigmentosa #rp #usherssyndrome #stargardtsdisease #rarediseaseawareness #ffb
