a couple of days ago i came across a very disturbing video on instagram. it was of a white woman listening to blackpink while excessively chewing on some noodles and progressed to stretch her eyes out making them slanted while mockingly staring at the camera. “can i be a member of blackpink now” she asked. no, you definitely can’t. not only because of your absolute rudeness, but you humiliated the entire asian community by stretching your eyes out while having this sarcastic grin plastered on your face. i can’t even count how many times i’ve had people coming up to my face just to stretch their eyes out and laugh right in front of me. it still baffles me how people have the audacity to openly mock someone for their appearance or race, and it disgusts me that such things are still happening as of today in 2019. what that woman did is nothing new. stretched out eyes as a form of racism towards asians is not new. i’ve been forced to endure that myself, such as many more asian people. it makes me horrified that we’re so desperate to start up a controversy just to get attention on social media nowadays and it disgusts me that you even think of a racist move to put yourself out there. i’m so sorry to all asian people that felt uncomfortable. what she did is not okay, not even the slightest. the worst thing is that she sarcastically apologized - but she totally missed the point. instead of taking responsibility and genuinely apologizing she put rather more focus on the fact that she’d eaten her ramen with a fork. she totally missed the slanted eyes thing, which is the most problematic aspect of that video. what upsets me the most is the fact that she doesn’t care about how she has affected countless of people (since the video now is kind of viral). all i see is her replying to comments sarcastically and not even bothering to explain her actions. that’s truly the epitome of ignorant and i’m sorry for everybody who got such a reply from her.
