One of the most iconic paintings from Jusepe de Ribera’s mature period, Girl with a Tambourine, coming up at @sothebys London in July with an estimate of £5-7 million. The girl represents the sense of hearing and belongs to a series of Five Senses, an extraordinary collection of portraits from life. Dated 1637, the picture is richly descriptive in texture and vivacity. There is a coarseness to her strongly shadowed face and the loose strands of hairs framing it. In balance there are delicate details such as the white ribbon braided into her hair above the right ear that leads on to a piece of feather.
