Brené Brown is my girl. My BFF. My leader, my sensei, my mentor, my coach, my cheerleader. This book has been on my shelf for months but was the perfect read for right now, when my team at work is going through changes and hard conversations are happening and healthy leaders are needed more than ever. I’m encouraged and empowered and excited about applying these principles to my life and work. I probably highlighted 5928 sentences and copied 263 into my journal for safekeeping. This one is just a GOLDMINE. // ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️— amazing. #radreadswomenandpoc #alltheradreads2019
“And yet again, we say goodbye.”
.
.
Today for take over Tuesday I am switching things up a bit. Today I want to share with you about a special women who I met early along my business journey. Her and I have similar passions for loss mama’s, breaking the silence surrounding grief & openly sharing our journey’s though pregnancy loss.
.
.
This week is especially hard for her. Because this week she had to say goodbye to her 6th heavenside baby. .
.
Melissa @josiahandco is a beautiful mom. She’s a women of deep integrity. She is passionate and purposeful in everything she does. She always shares joy in precious moments (especially her dance parties with her littles) and is open & honest about the struggles this world holds as she graciously opens up about her own heartbreaks. .
.
She’s a momma to 8 beautiful babes. Ezekiel (earthside), Josiah (heavenside), Little Bubs (heavenside), Little Bubs 2 (heavenside), Eliyanah (earthside), Jeremiah (heavenside), Jordan (heavenside), and her precious baby boy born this week (heavenside).
.
.
She’s a women learning how to live in a place where joy and grief are constantly colliding and co-existing. She’s a momma you see carrying two beautiful children in her arms, and a heart that carries them all.
.
.
She’s a women that is so gracious to share her love, losses, heartbreak, and exuberance with so many in hopes to encourage others. In the middle of her own pain she selflessly encourages and inspires others to keep going.
.
.
I for one am beyond grateful to know Melissa. To be able to work along side of her. Today, I want her to know that we are here for her. That we are with her. That she is not alone.
.
.
So please, pop over to her account. Leave her some love. Remind her just how incredible she is.
.
.
Melissa, may you always know we are here. That we are in your corner, and on your side. We are holding you up when you cannot take another step. No matter how long it takes, we are cheering you on. That each baby you hold we will always remember with you. Each one that has gone too soon is a precious and integral part of your family. And that we will all celebrate, remember and cherish right along with you. ❤️
If our culture didn’t put so many conflicting expectations on us as women (do hard things but make them look easy; be perfect but don’t let anyone know how hard you’re trying; be a leader but don’t make anyone uncomfortable; grow a human life but make it look like you never did), would we allow ourselves to feel more joy in those moments that seem imperfect, messy and, not “social-media worthy”?
I keep catching myself looking in the mirror lately and hoping everything will keep shrinking—my stomach, my hips, my thighs... And then I glance at this beautiful baby and ask myself—If I’m wishing it all away, am I just wishing him away, too?
Maybe I could have “done pregnancy better.” Maybe I did the best I knew how. But I won’t waist another minute listening to the lies we so easily mistake for truths.
You don’t have to make your life look easy, perfect, comfortable or like anyone else’s to be good enough. Let’s give ourselves permission to let go of these expectations (who came up with them anyway?) and just BE. Be messy, be imperfect, be you. #youareenough #giftsofimperfection #courageiscontagious
When Brené Brown shared these words during a live talk at SXSW earlier this year, a lightbulb went off for me.
.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I've been immersed in her research on vulnerability, courage, shame, and worthiness since doing training in 2014, but sometimes hearing a concept articulated in a new way leads to a new level of awareness. She may have been referring to people leaving anonymous online comments (and included a curse word), but we all know the feeling of being hurt by someone's words, regardless of context.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We have a choice when stuff is hurled from what Brené calls the cheap seats (people who don’t know us well and aren’t also showing up in the arena being vulnerable and brave). Yes, hurtful comments will sting initially, but if we are clear about who's opinion matters and who's opinion doesn't matter, we get *very* boundaried with what we let into our hearts and what we don't (hint: your list of who's opinion matters should be very small and only contain people who love and care about you, not in spite of your imperfections, but because of them).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✨ #CourageIsContagious ✨ Give yourself permission to see the hurtful stuff, recognize the opinions that don't matter, and keep on going.⠀
.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As always, if you have questions or need more support to understand and integrate a concept into your own life, get in touch or find a professional in your area with training in shame resilience. Applying this work in our lives takes practice and it can be helpful to have someone to help work through barriers when they crop up.

EXTENDED QUOTE: When we deny our stories, they define us. When we own our stories, we get to write a brave new ending.
.
I know this is true. I may have learned it as a researcher but I live this truth as a daughter, a partner, a leader, a sister, a mother, and a friend. When we push down hurt or pretend that struggle doesn’t exist, the hurt and struggle own us.
.
I’ve learned that writing a brave new ending in our personal lives means:
.
1. We can’t smooth over hurt feelings in our families. It’s too easy for stockpiled hurt to turn into rage, resentment, and isolation. We must talk about it. Even when we don’t want to. Even when we’re tired.
.
2. We can’t pretend our family histories of addiction and mental health issues don’t exist if our hope is to write a new story and pass that legacy of emotional honesty and health down to our children.
.
3. We must own our failures and mistakes so that we can learn and grow. It’s hard but I’ve seen how it becomes part of a family and organizational cultures and unleashes innovation and creativity. It doesn’t feel comfortable, but courage rarely does.

After my life came crashing down in summer of 2017, I didn’t want my face on camera. I had a deep soul longing to be invisible, to disappear. I was ashamed and so disappointed about everything. Yet slowly, over the months, I found myself again and light within me grew. Then I even landed a job that got me in front of the camera every week. I knew it was Heaven gently coaxing me out of my shell.
_
Reminding me what I am created for.
_
I felt God be like, “I have not wasted anything on you, Anita. You are not going to work in McDonald’s or Walmart. Just you wait. Let me love you back to life and one day you will return your craft.”
_
This is such an intangible thing, but I think it deserves to be mentioned. Being open and present here—with my self, my body, my soul— is the fruit of my spiritual journey Homeward.
_
It takes some nerves of steel to be in front of the camera and on social media, or else it takes an unfaltering, fiercely bright inner light.
_
On my healing journey I heard someone say, “If the light within you is not greater than the light on you, the light that is on will destroy you.” So true. This quote gave me permission to take time out and cultivate my inner light, and I hope it will for you too.
_
Thank you to everyone who’s commented lately on my vlogs and posts. It’s been a long road home, but it feels so good to be back here with you. ☺️
