From @cincinnati_revealed - The Robert McWilliams House, nestled on a hillside high above the Ohio River, represents one of the finest examples of Antebellum Period architecture in Cincinnati. Built in 1840, the home is a pure example of the monumental Greek Revival style that became fashionable during the 1820’s. The popularity of the style was due to the Greek fight for independence against the Ottoman Turks and the emergence of Andrew Jackson’s “Jacksonian Democracy”, which rejected the aristocratic pretense of the Federalists (and their architectural model). Although the scale of the McWilliams House is fairly modest, the architecture is pure Greek Revival and includes the characteristic pediment gable, Portico supported by Doric columns, the use of sidelights/transom as part of the front entrance, and a symmetrical facade. In addition, the prerequisite white paint was meant to mimic the white marble associated with the construction of Greek temples. Not unexpected for a building of this vintage along the Mason-Dixon Line, the floor plan suggests that the home aided former slaves as a station on the Underground Railroad.
