That moment when you realize your lifer corn snake is about to nom on your arm. • This is a photo from last summer, I’d just seen my first wild corn snake. We had found this individual on the road and wanted to remove it before anyone else arrived. The corn snake was not docile like I expected and chewed on my arm for a few minutes. I didn’t want to harm its jaws or teeth, so I released this sassy boi to safety, after he taught me a lesson.

Mohave desert sidewinder from Friday night. @thewrangler1999 @jaiden_cumer and I went out to the desert and met up with @dallasjolly and @sosa.yoseph . We ended up seeing a combined total of 11 snakes and 5 species. Honestly I was surprised with the snake activity for the night, and I’m totally stoked with the results. I also like the spotlight lighting effect on the head of this sidewinder. A juvenile Southern ring-necked snake (Diadophis punctatus punctatus) that was found crossing the road last weekend. • Did you know that ring-necked snakes are mildly venomous? True venom glands are absent in this species, but they are equipped with Duvernoy's glands - an organ found beneath the lips and behind the eye on either side of the head. When the snake chews, the gland releases toxins that incapacitates the prey item. • Phospholipase, an enzyme that destroys phospholipids, is found in their saliva - an enzyme also found in viperid and elapid snake's venom. • Ring-necked snake venom is used to subdue small prey items such as slugs, earthworms, small lizards, and salamanders, and it has been observed to be used as a defense against smaller predators, like snakes. Ring-necked snake venom is weak and doesn't impact humans, this species is also incredibly docile and rarely bites. • The snake was moved off the road after a short photo shoot. Next up a nice looking Mohave glossy. Snakes look so much bigger than they actually are when they show up in your headlights, and this guy was no exception.
