4 MOVES FOR A STRONGER BACK! - What’s up, Achievers?! @jasonlpak here and today I’ve got four different moves that will help you to develop a stronger back! - 1️⃣The first move is a band resisted row - the band helps you to keep more constant engagement on your back rather than being completely relaxed at the bottom. It also helps to provide you with some feedback to pull the dumbbell “toward your hip” rather than pulling toward your shoulder. - 2️⃣The second move is a 1.5 reverse flye. Adding a half rep on top of a full rep adds time under tension and makes sure you’re not just relying on momentum. This one is a burner - use some light weights! - 3️⃣The third move is a “floating deadlift” - a popular move in the weightlifting community that promotes strong back alignment. While nothing is actively contracting, as long as you’re holding a flat back posture, all of the muscles along your entire spine are working hard in an isometric fashion not to flex over. - 4️⃣The last move is an overhead “Y”. This move strengthens your lower traps, but it also challenges your entire back again (just like the floating deadlift ) due to the bent over hinging pattern you’re trying to maintain. - Perform 3-4 sets of the moves above! - We hope this post helped you out! In this post, we’ve addressed how to modify your exercise selection if you’re experiencing pain in your lower back during rows. - Experiencing lower back pain or discomfort during an exercise might leave you feeling alarmed or discouraged, but we hope this post provides you with some useful information as well as a framework to navigate how to manage the pain you’re feeling. Your body is much more resilient than you might think, and you’re in much more control than you might realize! - If you’re experiencing lower back pain with a barbell bent over row, for example, all you need to do is slide down the “lumbar stress” spectrum in Tony’s graph. It’s all about load and stress, and your body’s ability to handle and tolerate that load and stress. So, just by using dumbbells instead of a barbell, you might feel totally fine because you’re able to keep dumbbells in closer to your center of mass, thereby reducing the amount of lumbar stress on your system. - If dumbbells hurt, don’t sweat it. Keep working your way down - chest supported rows are a fantastic way to incorporate pulling that really, minimally stress the lumbar spine. When you’re ready, perform knee supported rows with a light weight and then gradually increase load and eventually slide up the scale if that’s something you’re interested in doing. Here are a few options for the “Pulling” portion or day of your workout. As I’ve mentioned before, a good way to split up your workout routine is into a Push day, Pull day and Leg day. This is a popular split because you can really focus on compound movements more than one joint moving. Great way to build strength, gain muscle or even lose weight!

There are SO many variations you can do on pull day that I’d need 20 pages but a lot of the ones that aren’t here can be achieved by changing the equipment used, position you’re in or how you grip the equipment. For example, a barbell row can also be a reverse grip barbell row just by having your palms away from you.

You’re pretty much always using your upper back muscles with pulling movements and any time you are flexing at the elbow, you’re using your biceps . The angle that you pull will determine which back muscles you are primarily hitting.

Because there are so many options, the number of exercises you choose will depend on your experience, goals and what equipment you have available.
