We've promised to post more details on the whole Santa thing, and how Yule got hijacked and renamed into Christmas so here it goes. - If you find this information useful and didn't know about it please help us spread the word! - When the Yule celebration was in full swing, Odin was both a terrifying specter and an anxiously awaited gift-bringer, soaring through the skies on his flying eight-legged horse, Sleipnir. - On Yule Gods and hgosts went soaring above the rooftops on the Wild Hunt (Oskoreia). One of Odin's many names were Jölnir (Yule Figure) and Jölfö�r (Yule father). The Allfather and his horse Sleipnir led the flying Wild Hunt, accompanied by Valkyries and a few other gods and ghosts. - They would fly over the villages terrifying any who happened to be out and about at night. But Odin would also deliver gifts. Children would fill their boots with straw for Sleipnir, Odin would come and leave his gifts behind. Sounds familiar? - When Christians tried to eradicete paganism, honoring Odin became forbidden. Christian celebrations got rescheduled to coincide with Yule (Winter Solstice) and Odin was pushed out of the picture (he got replaced by Saint Nicholas). - After the Reformation. St. Nick got forgotten in Protestant countries of Europe (except Holland). In Holland he morphed into Sinter Klaas (wise old man with white beard and red cloak, who ride the skies on his eight-legged white horse, delivering gifts on his birthday (December 6th). Does this reminds you of Odin yet? - In 17th century Dutch immigrants brought their tradition of Sinter Klaas to America, where his name changed into Santa Claus. - A jolly man with a white beard, red coat, carrying a bag full of gifts for children, became popular in 19th century after the publication of the poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas". The eight-legged horse was replaced with eight flying reindeers.
