One of the most haunted places in Louisiana, but also one of its best kept secrets. The Villa De ale Vernge in Covington sits right off of the banks of the Bogue Falaya river. Built in the late 1700s on a Spanish land grant, the villa was the summer home of the de la Vergne family of New Orleans, a family that included military officers, bankers, elected officials and prominent lawyers. They are considered one of the founding families of New Orleans, having first arrived from France in 1767. At one time, during the early part of the 20th century, this house was the place to be seen. The New Orleans newspapers would have stories about the “Who’s Who” of New Orleans attending parties here. Before being purchased by the de le Vergnes, Capt. John Smoker, who was part of the crew that piloted the Robert E. Lee against the Riverboat Natchez from New Orleans to St. Louis in the Great Mississippi Riverboat Race owned this house. It was used as a military base for a short period and is said that there are trap doors and military personnel buried throughout the property. The most chilling story (and the one that makes me uneasy every time I pass this house) is one about a young girl whom the family “adopted” after slavery was abolished, who was so neglected and malnourished by the family, she froze to death one freezing winter. This house has almost NO information on the internet. I’ve found two tiny articles regarding it, but the neighborhood and the previous caretaker know a lot of lore and mysterious stories about the home. The home has been abandoned for years, but as of October of 2018, a well known historic home restorer is working on saving this run down, yet gorgeous home.
