Ryan’s Daughter (1970)
After the massive success of “Doctor Zhivago”, (1965) David Lean was given carte blanche by MGM for his next project. He chose an adaptation of the Madame Bovary story, set in 1920’s Ireland. The film was so poorly received by critics that Christopher Jones retired from acting and Lean did not make another movie for 14 years. The village of Kirrary was built from scratch and the studio offered to leave it standing as a possible tourist attraction; no agreement could be reached with the landowners and it was demolished soon after production. Only the shell of the school house remains. One of the films undisputed virtues is the jaw dropping cinematography of Freddie Young, who deservedly won the Academy Award for his work. It was the last film shot in the Super Panavision 70 format until Ron Howard’s “Far and away” (1992) which was, coincidentally, shot on many of the same locations. #ryansdaughter #filmlocation #movielocation #filmlocations #movielocations #thenandnow #abandonedplaces #abandoned #robertmitchum #sarahmiles #davidlean #leomckern #freddieyoung #dingle #kerry #ireland #oldhollywood
