ACCEPTANCE - Part 1. . For many years I felt like I didnt belong to either Sri-Lanka or Australia. I couldn't identify as a Sri Lankan for many reasons but mainly because didn't grew up there. I cant remember much of it at all. All of what I know are through stories I've heard from my family and family friends and from what I've read. . Although, I've been in #Australia since I was 3, did all my schooling here, made all my friends here, deep inside I never felt I could say I was #Australian because back then it meant being caucasian. . This cultural identity issue lived in me for many years. But now I truly feel things have changed. The definition of Australian has evolved. There is a whole new generation of aussies who, just like me, have migrant parents and were either born or raised here. We all sound Australian but look different. It's one thing I love about this country. I've learnt about so many different cultures through my friends and we have the freedom to explore our own ancestry and heritage. So I've decided, I'm going to accept that I need to be the change I want to see. These days I identify as an Australian Tamil. ‍♀️ . PERSPECTIVES - Part 2 . Some time during primary school, the conversation about skin colour came up at home. I don't remember the exact details of what or how. But, I do remember my fair skinned mum saying, "All the beautiful women in Sri Lanka have dark skin!" She said it in a way as though she was stating a fact instead of trying to make me feel better. You know how you can always tell when some is just saying something for the sake for saying it or when they don't mean it. Anyways, as an adult I realise how my mum can't be bother with all the talk about skin colour. Till this day, if skin colour comes up within anyone from the brown community, mum will say something like, "Well to all the Australians we are all black anyway" lol just her way of providing perspective I suppose. . . .
