Cara Sinclair on Deucalion II
My heart was pounding. we shouldn’t of entered this show. after warming up my arms and legs ached like mad. he was. THE strongest creature i had ever ridden. i have ridden alfie. i have ridden nyx. i have ridden ares. but NO horse is as strong as him. i felt like crying as we entered the arena. the massive jumps left shadows overcasting the ground. my breathing began to get shaky as i watched a rider almost fall head first into a jump before sticking it on. ‘Next in the ring, Cara Sinclair on Deucalion II’. i took a fat puff of my inhaler and entered the arena. the buzzer went and rather than picking up canter, deuke catleaped into the air. spinning and broncing. ‘gET ON!!’ i shouted. he snorted before setting off into what looked like a bouncy canter but was really me having my arms pulled off. we headed towards the first jump, a tall spread. ‘one, two, thr— FUCK ME’ he launched into the air. catapulting me out of the saddle as he pinged he jump. i gasped as his backend landed in the middle of the jump, snapping the pole in half he hopped over its broken pieces and shot off into a strong canter. i had no control. i just turned into the next jump, a yellow oxer. he jumped it leaving about a metre of room. we hit the ground hard and i felt myself grow unbalanced. i pulled him up. sorted myself out. and kicked us back into a canter. yes he was still yanking out my arms. but we could do this. we turned towards a large vertical. he pressed hard against the bit. i hesitated before letting him get flat. he jumped the fence perfectly, curving his back and arching his neck. i patted him quickly before lining up to a double. a spread, two strides and then a towering oxer. i held him together, but kept his stride flat. he cleared the first jump perfectly. he snorted. and put in one stride where other hordes were getting two. to avoid breaking yet another jump i softened my hands and let the reins slip as he threw himself over it. we headed towards a smaller vertical. he popped it beautifully before doing a swift dog leg turn. he yanked hard against my hands, fighting me right up to the last stride, (CONT)

look at that collected trot i sat, staring across the open arena. the crisp morning sun shining down on us. the cool air sparking energy in the both of us. i turned as my instructor came up. ‘you ready?’ she stared at deuke in obvious awe. he was watching horses galloping in a field across the river. with a soft jab in the side i snapped back his attention and we headed into a walk. clearly the air was getting to him. even at a walk he was pulling hard against the bit, almost taking me out of the saddle. i pulled him up to a halt. i pulled some mints out of my pocket and leans over his neck. he lipped then up delicately. nodding his head as he crunched. i gave myself a mental slap. shoved my heels down and we started into a trot. that was what we needed. his head hung in a perfect outline. neck soft and low but his stride long and balanced. i focussed on myself. pushing my heels down and sitting straight. making sure to keep my hands up so he could ride into the contact rather than be pulled down into it. ‘cara, perform 5-15 steps of collected trot when you reach the tree’. my instructor called, her harsh blue eyes staring me down. i collected my reins, keeping my hands soft and firm. keeping a strong contact leg pressure. we reached the tree. i gathered him. he began to bounce up. my leg guiding each stride to collect more and more. his neck was in a high collection. his knees riding high as he collected, it felt like bouncing on a cloud. i gave myself a mental slap as i felt myself tip slightly forward. however i couldn’t help but be proud of my secure lower leg. after 8 steps we pushed back into our normal trot. he performed without question. i smiled, pulling him up and giving him another few mints, patting him happily. my instructor looked us up and down. she was strict and extremely harsh. who knew what she would say. ‘cara. your upper body position was atrocious’. i rolling my eyes. atricious my ass. ‘however. your leg was a lot more stable and deuke collected his neck perfectly. however his strides need to collect more.’ i stared. compliments second ride and home and he was going like this? maybe we actually had a chance at this fundraiser
handsome lad
i wandered into the yard. it was a quiet day, the usual grooms and every day riders but nothing out of the ordinary. i looked over, deuke had his head poking over the door. i sighed, this was all so new to him. he was used to strict discipline, perfect tidy yards that would be nothing like silverglade. friendly people petting him as they walked by, hay covering the floor. but he seemed to enjoy it, after a day to relax he was actually very peaceful. with a peppermint in my hand i started towards his stable. he spotted me, watching with ears pricked as i opened up my palm and he delicately lipped up the mint. his rug and tail were full of strands of hay, clearly from sleeping on the ground. i led him outside, warm weather, why stay in. i tides him up, pulled off his rug and began to groom him. shaking the knots and hay out of his tail. he dozed quietly, only stirring at horses wandering by. i left him tied up and headed to the tack room. i stared at all of the tack i had been given. two gp saddles, one jumping saddle and one dressage saddle. accompanied by a figure 8 nose band bridle, two normal nose band bridles and a hackamore. i selected one of the bridles, and hooked one of the gp saddles over my arm. i stared at the elaborate selection of tack sets. i grabbed the chestplate & gel pad before grabbing a random blue set and heading back over. he was still dozing quietly. for a stallion, recently imported from spain, with crazy high blood lines, he was amazing. so relaxed, i didn’t under why the riding school would send him to me. waving away the thought i began to tack up. adjusting his chestplate one more time i unclipped his head collar and began to head over to a mounting block. he suddenly froze rigid. a mare in heat. it was then that i saw how there could be issues. he began to snort. pawing the ground and pulling hard against me. i spun him in a tight circle. snapping my fingers and playing with his bit to try and catch his attention. the mare & rider weren’t helping. the mare was now snorting and whinnying at him. the rider was clearly clueless and just sat there. i leaped onto deukes back from the ground. i wasn’t waiting to see (CONT)
throwback to winning elementary dressage and getting 2nd in the 1.20m sj wiv alfie so so so so so. let’s explain. i’ll start with the bad news. beautiful alfie boy here isn’t going to be seen much on my account anymore. i rode alfie because his owner was struggling to take care of all her horses and struggling to sell them. however now, she had her situation sorted and alfie is her main competition horse. don’t worry, he’s still going to be at sgec and distracting everyone while galloping around with nyx. i just won’t have the honour of riding him anymore. and now onto the new boy. deuke. he’s a pure bred lipizzaner stud. he stands at 15.3hh and is just 7 years old. he couldn’t adapt at the spanish riding schoil. yes of course is an amazing dressage horse, but for the Spanish riding school, he wasn’t up to standard. so. they offered for ME to train him as an eventer. he has amazing scope and ability. yes i was as shocked as you that they chose me. he arrived yesterday. he’s having a few days of basic flatwork & hacking the show. myself and deuke r competing in the New Hillcrest Fundraiser. he’s not a loan, he doesn’t belong to me. but he’s basically mine. i ride him, care for him and everything. the Spanish Riding School legally owns him and also pays for his basic needs such as livery and feed. just a quick post to clear everything up. these are his basic details:
——
show name: Deucalion II
stable name: Deuke
breed: Pure Lipizzaner
gender: Stallion/Stud/Male
age: 7
height: 15.3hh
discipline: training to become an eventer //-//
