A 29-year-old computer #scientist Dr. Katie Bouman has earned applause worldwide for helping develop the algorithm that created the first-ever image of a #blackhole using the Event Horizon Telescope, which incidentally made her the first person to see the image of a black hole.
Katherine Louise Bouman (born 1989) is an American imaging scientist and Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the California Institute of Technology.
She works on computational methods for imaging.
She started making the #algorithm three years ago while she was a #graduate student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
There, she led the project, assisted by a team from MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and the MIT Haystack Observatory. "Watching in disbelief as the first image I ever made of a black hole was in the process of being reconstructed," she wrote in the caption to the Facebook post.
The black hole image, captured by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) - a network of eight linked telescopes - was rendered by Dr Bouman's algorithm.

The trick to fitting 2 meters of DNA into a 0.000006 meter wide nucleus *and* keeping it organized? Loops. Lots of loops. .
Illustration by Falconieri Visuals in March 2019 @SciAm. Art Direction by Jen Christiansen .
Also, thank you to @jillkg718 for her recent Adobe Illustrator webinar for the AMI. See all those vector DNA loops? They were made 1000x more efficient by one of her tips.

Amanda Imai (@curatorialchronicles) is an art and archaeological conservator. She is currently finishing her masters at University College London and will be working at the Victoria and Albert Museum next year. Her specialty is in stone objects and sculptures. Here, she is seen conserving an ancient Egyptian (Ptolemaic) cartonnage, which once surrounded a mummified body before its placement in a sarcophagus. Amanda is clearing the surface of dirt, but she has to be careful of introducing moisture that would potentially distort the material by shrinking or swelling. After dry cleaning with soft brushes, she will apply a mixture of IMS (Industrial Methylated Spirit) and acetone, depending on how easily the dirt can be mobilized. Then she consolidates loose pieces with a mixture of thermoplastic acrylic resin (paralloid B72) and acetone. Amanda also does field work, as seen in the second picture while on-site during an excavation of an ancient Greek temple complex. This summer she will be in Pompeii and Tuscany conserving ruins and Etruscan wall paintings!.

@the_wandering_archaeologist is a PhD student in Archaeology at the University of Oxford, with a specialisation in osteoarchaeology. Based in the Basque Country (Northern Spain), Emma carries out analysis of human skeletal remains to examine patterns of health, disease, diet and migration in the past. Her doctoral research focuses on mapping and analyzing the funerary landscapes of northern Iberia through the use of spatial technologies. She hopes to understand migration and the development of protohistoric identities in the region from the Iron age to the early medieval period. In the summer, Emma also directs excavations of a medieval ossuary (a large depository of human bones, in this case spanning a 1000 year period) in Navarre and runs an international field program for students of anthropology and archaeology to gain practical experience in the exhumation of human remains.

Two neonate (newborn) snakes flipped under the same rock. One is a common garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis) and the other is a red-bellied snake (Storeria occipitomaculata).
.
These two are about the same size right now, but garter snakes are generally larger than red-bellieds when fully grown!
.
Which species of snake have you guys seen already this year?
