SCAM ALERT. Aias wanted to buy and download a game for the computer called "Scrap Mechanic" because it looks very cool. He has a Chromebook that does not run the game. He decided to look on the ASUS tablet to see if the game, or something similar, was there. Lo and behold, there was a game called Scrap Mechanic on there in the Play Store and it was free. It used the same branding and imagery. He downloaded it. When he started running the game, it started asking for unusual permissions. He noticed these were not permissions games usually ask for. He asked me about it and I said don't worry about it, Google Play has the game so it's probably fine (mom fail). He started the game and it didn't work. It was just ads. We deleted the game. Later he said, "I think those permissions were too weird, maybe we should tell the police." I laughed because it seemed so silly. Well, the joke is on me. Tonight Morgan called from work because we had a bunch of weird charges on PayPal. To the tune of almost $700. I literally filed 45 dispute resolutions on Paypal, and then called their support number. Fortunately, this was before 8pm when their support line closes, and it's not the 1st of the month when bills are due, just a day before. I googled it, and apparently, this is a thing. https://www.paypal-community.com/t5/About-Protections/Fake-Google-Unauthorized-Charges/td-p/1176575/page/2 I have been on the phone with PayPal since 6 now. It seems they are going to fix it, but it's proving to be quite the process as it is literally 45 transactions. If this does not fix it, I guess I will have to go through Google and/or my credit union. Huge pain in the butt. A number of lessons here: - 8-year-olds are smart, we are old and uncool and out of touch. God help us. - Google Play apps are not safe and not infallible. - Pay attention when you give permissions. - Keep a close eye on PayPal. Please don't download this game, and make sure your kids have not. If they have, delete it, go into your Paypal account, and make sure it has not set up recurring payments in your account.
