What was your PSLE score? I had to buzz my mum to ask her to check as neither of us remember! I don't have a dramatic story of the exact moment I got my results, but what I do remember is the feeling that "Oh, it was ALMOSTTTT 250.", ie the magical number that supposedly guaranteed that you could go to a very good school. .⠀ I didn't go to the top secondary schools, but I did go to a school where I met some of the most important people in my life ‍♀️ My best friend and I met at a speech & drama excursion and she's still the first person I text every day. I was in the school band where we practiced and practiced for the SYF competition, where I learnt about hard work, disappointment and teamwork My classmates were much smarter than I am and took the time to tutor me after school (urgh, math, you were the bane of school life! ). I didn't go to a "top school" because of my PSLE score, but I went to a school where I made friends who are still top in my heart.⠀ .⠀ When I listen to students at school talks and dance class, the concern over grades is stronger than before, with anxiety and depression in the mix. What I’ve experienced is that our exam results are just a stepping stone to the next chapter ‍♀️ The higher your score, the more options you have. Even with a lower score, there ARE options available. After that, the working world assesses you on what you can bring to the table, which is much more varied and complex than a score from one chapter of your life.⠀ .⠀ I’m giving a big hurray to the peeps who have started @lifebeyondgrades as it encourages us to look beyond our grades. The opportunity to try different things outside the academic score is something I’m totally on board with, so I can't wait to see what this team has in store to help children and parents shift their mindset about exams and grades.⠀ .⠀ If you could go back in time for 5 mins to talk to your 12-year old self, what would you tell her?
