The common thresher shark. Named after its long tail, which can be as long as the shark itself, the common thresher can be found in British waters. They use their tail like a whip to stun their prey. They are classed as vulnerable due to the fishing pressure that they face, mainly in Asia. The destruction of their habitat and nursing grounds are also putting pressure on the thresher shark numbers.

Mermaid’s purses are the egg capsules of certain shark species such as Nursehounds and Catsharks (dogfish) and all species of skates and rays. The tough leathery capsule protects a single embryo as it grows inside, whilst the long tendrils attach around seaweeds to secure it on the seabed. After several months they will be ready to hatch and emerge as baby shark or skate! . The egg cases often wash ashore once empty so can be used to monitor species populations around our coasts - you can report finds to the Shark Trust’s #GreatEggCaseHunt! However sometimes the egg cases do wash ashore with a little developing shark or skate still inside - so it’s always a good idea so hold it up to the sunlight to check, and move it back to sea if occupied! . I made these quite these fairy lights using empty mermaids purses I found whilst beach combing!
