Pressure is insecurity where confidence usually lives, pressure is experience shadowed by new components, pressure is using material you can't currently afford to replace if things go wrong, pressure is searching for your lucky pencil and finding it in your hair. For me pressure makes success sweeter and drives me to be more badass than I was before I started. #purpleheart #dontbreakmyheart
Leg day. So much out of the shop time these past few weeks and this week will be no different...I am teaching at two different camps but I am grabbing every bit I can to finish up commissions before the #blackswampprep2019 madness begins. This @bowproducts_featherpro featherpro makes ripping legs so much safer and more consistent! Happy Monday friends!
Before I left I mapped out several sheets of plywood with my new @kaprotools squares. The ledge keeps it on the sheet...Game changer..... And the combination square is magnetic so I don't have to worry about losing the twisty knob.
I will be able to hit the ground running when I get back with a pile of plywood marked and ready to cut.
Guys it’s so hot but the table base is almost assembled

I ran out of lumber for my new miter station with planer stand so it’s half cut haha

How’s your tues? .

Today’s post is the first in a series on windows, and I begin with perhaps the most common type: residential flanged windows. These are used in production homes, multi-family “podium” mid-rise construction, and even some custom homes.
*
So what do you need to know about these windows? The frames are made of vinyl (more common) or aluminum and they have a “flange” (also sometimes called a nailing fin), which is a thin protrusion that extends out from the the frame. The flange is significant for three reasons:
*
(1) it provides the mechanism for fastening the window in place — the window is nailed or screwed through the flange into the sheathing and the framing,
*
(2) it dictates where the window sits within the rough opening — the flange sits flush with the face of the sheathing, which sets its front-back position in the wall, and
*
(3) it represents the window’s “wet-dry” line — everything in front of it can be considered exterior and everything behind can be thought of as interior.
*
So that’s the basic rundown, here are a couple additional things to keep in mind:
*
About that flange: If the flange is the wet-dry line, it makes a difference whether or not the flange is integral to the frame or whether it is a separate piece that snaps in place. If it’s a separate piece, extend the waterproofing (usually with self-adhered membrane) over the entirety of the flange and onto the frame. (I do not recommend relying on the “blind seal” you get by applying sealant to the flange before you snap it in place).
*
Weeps at the sill: Always, always, always allow the rough opening to drain at the sill. The easiest way to do this with flanged windows is to not seal the flange at the sill (not with sealant, not with tape). Notice that it’s the rough opening we’re allowing to drain, not the window itself (which has its own weeps). This has (stupidly) become a point of controversy lately, and I’ll cover that next week, but save yourself some trouble here and leave that sill flange unsealed.
Sometimes inspiration for design and color are hard to find for certain pieces. I’m not one to rush a project just to get it done. I want it done right so that I enjoy it for a long time to come. As far as design, a light bulb went off last night , but as for colors, black and white are split down the middle. So for now, I continue to sand the frame of this second unit and mull over colors.
.
Also, another round of, “Show me your pets.” Today through Friday, use the hashtag #southernglimpsepets and tag @southernglimpse. I’ll be featuring my favorite in stories on Friday. Can’t wait to see! Happy Wednesday!
