Justice for Maestra Olivia Arévalo Lomas for being assassinated in front of her family for protecting her ancestral lands! Protector our elders and wisdom-keepers. ✊✊✊ If you’re on Turtle Island working with ayahuasca and other traditional Shipibo Konibo medicine without the acknowledging where the medicine comes from and reciprocating to the communities who are literally assassinated for protecting their ancestral lands, you are complicit in colonialism and genocide. If you work with traditional medicines, you have a responsibility to educate and advocate for the traditional peoples that you psychospiritually benefit from. These curanderas are actively being targeted! We must use our capital (social, financial, etc) to uplift our native community in the global south who Amerikkka extracts from. Do not be complicit. ☝ Photo from 2010. #maestraoliviaarevalo #nativesoutdoors #nativewomenswilderness #wearewildness #diversifyoutdoors #criticalecology #decolonizenatureconnection #natureconnection #earthconnection #ancestralskills #ancestralconnection #shipibokonibo #oliviaarevalo #justiceforolivia

‘Learning’ - Shipibo Series 2 of 3 by @tefa_ortiz_morillo - “Olinda and Ronin painted two murals as part of the Amazonarte Festival 3rd edition in the city of Tingo María. A mural was based on a more traditional and ancient Kené design where you can see more straight forms without curves and where the main protagonist is the southern cross. The second mural was a more contemporary design, in this there is presence of curves and more colours representing rivers, forests, among other characteristic elements of the Amazon. In this creative process, Olinda gives the initial guideline drawing the sketch and Ronin reviews with the brush and fills the spaces with colour. Both concentrating they seem to go at the same pace in almost choreographic movements.
.
Olinda Silvano and her son Michell or Ronin as he likes to be called have been painting together for some time now despite the fact that many people in her community criticised her for teaching her son to paint, since it was traditionally an exclusive women’s activity.
.
Olinda still maintains the use of her typical clothes and her son is a skate lover and wears more contemporary clothes but that does not make them so different. They both live proud of their Shipibo-Konibo culture and aim to transmit their knowledge from generation to generation, breaking prejudices and helping to strengthen the Shipibo-Konibo identity.
.
Olinda tells me that to paint these impressive Kené designs that apart from not being easy, they demand a lot of time and detail, for that reason they paint the designs collectively. Above all as it is part of their culture to teach and transmit more people their knowledge.”

We’ve had this same set up in the shop for little over a year now and I think we are both ready for a change around! Tomorrow our custom cabinets should be arriving, so we’re excited to have a little reorganise/deep clean/change of energy + lots of Palo Santo burning (which is always a good idea!) ✨

A few weeks ago I had the most incredible opportunity to spend time with Olinda and Silvia while they were here in Vancouver painting at mural @moa_ubc
Their strength, determination and commitment touches and inspires me so deeply.
Thank you dear sister @shamanfashionista for introducing me to these amazing women and the medicine of your homeland. .

LIVING DESIGN .
.
“Runi is the mother of the earth and water, as well as all the fish. If Runi were to die, the river would dry up and the earth would have no more strength. The river’s many fish would disappear.” ~ Reshijabe, Olinda Silvano Inuma de Arias and Runin Kaysi, Silvia Ricopa Chocano .
.
The kene or design, on the right is a symbolic representation of the all-powerful force described be Reshijabe and Runin Kaysi. .
.
The kene on the left is a map of the Ucayali region in the Peruvian Amazon. The thick black lines are filled with energy. They are the forest, while the blue outlines the river system. The curled designs within this blue line are fish and the colours mark the animal in the forest. Reshijabe and Runin Kaysi sang while they painted this mural, transferring their living culture into the design. .
.
Cantagallo, where the Shipibo-Konibo diaspora in Lima lived, burnt down in 2016. Ancestral strength and knowledge have helped them begin to recover from this tragedy. .
