Browsing our collection for Hamburg Süd related exhibits we found this painting by German marine artist Willy Stöwer (1864-1931) it is called "The Arrival of the Cap Polonio at the Port of Hamburg". The Cap Polonio was ordered by the company @hamburgsud_group in the early 1910s to be their largest ocean liner to that date. The ship was built at the Blohm & Voss yard in Hamburg, and launched on March the 25th 1914. The ship was being completed when World War I started and the work on her furnishing stopped. After a while, the ship was transformed into the auxiliar cruise SMS Viñeta for the German Imperial Navy. This transformation was completed in February 1915. During her sea trials, the Viñeta did not manage to reach the speed necessary to be an auxiliar cruiser. For this reason, she never served in the war. Instead of that, she was transformed back into an ocean liner, completed and delivered to her owners in August 1916. Named back as Cap Polonio, she stayed moored until 1919. In April of that year, she was transferred to the UK as war reparations. The Shipping Controller in London gave the ship to the Union Castle Line. Apparently due to the complexity of her propulsion system, the ship only reached a speed of 10 knots of her 16,9 top speed. For this reason, her owners gave her back. After reparations at the Devonport Dockyard, she went to the Peninsular and Oriental Line. But this company was also not satisfied with her performance and the ship was moored in Liverpool. The Hamburg Süd managed to buy the ship back and so the Cap Polonio sailed for the first time to South America on February the 16th 1922. At that point, she was the largest ship of the German fleet. She stayed the flagship of the Hamburg Süd until the Cap Arcona started her duty in 1927. Beside her duty as a liner, she served as a cruise ship from 1922 on. Her owner were starting to modernized her when the effects of the Great Depression hit the shipping industry. The Cap Polonio was then moored until 1935, when she was sent to be scrapped at the Lloyd Yard in Bremerhaven. This painting is exhibited on deck 9 of the museum.
