Meet "Uncle Arte", an old-growth sagebrush that lives near Kennewick. Uncle Arte is a relic of an earlier time, when trees and shrubs were able to grow to magnificent sizes. Even though we don't have many of these old-growth #sagebrush on our landscapes anymore, they are important to the #ecosystem. Sage grouse, now at critical levels and continuing to decline, nest underneath sagebrush. They rely on big sagebrush to provide a roof, and native bunchgrasses to surround the sagebrush to provide walls for their home. This is how eggs and chicks stay safe and protected from the elements and predators. Just like humans, if you remove the walls, or the roof, you no longer have a very safe or protective house to live in. Golden currant - Ribes aureum. This shrub can be found east of the Cascade mountains in ponderosa pine forests and the shrub-steppe. The flowers have a spicy smell. They are described as smelling like cloves or vanilla, depending on who you ask. Berries are quite tart but edible. This is a beautiful plant to add to your landscaping.

We counted 20 waterfalls out at Ancient Lakes yesterday. Wildflowers were blooming, meadow larks and canyon wrens calling....it was AMAZING!

It was an epic weekend for a trail run on Steamboat Rock (1.5 hours from Wenatchee). Did you know Steamboat Rock is actually a Mesa due to its large size on top. It is about a 4.5 mile trail jog round trip. The islands and amazing color of the water from the top of Steamboat is well worth the climb to get up there!

Tomorrow we start another grand adventure. We're traveling half way across the State for a few days. . Along the way, we'll be camping, visiting a (huge) favorite waterfall, seeing a big graffiti bus, and visiting a friend who has big dogs, chickens, and horses. . Summit and Gretel's life certainly isn't dull . Stay tuned to our stories.
