Nordre Kapel (1892), Vestre Kirkegård. Architect Hans Jørgen Holm (1835-1916). The chapel is the oldest out of three chapels - and the only one still functioning as such. A suitable size for a chapel at Denmark’s by far largest cemetery: 1 km long and ½ km wide. Most people today are cremated, and the cemetery is more like a park, with tombs here and there. Sculpture by Carl Rohl-Smith (1848-1900), Vestre Kirkegård. He emigrated 1886 to the USA, and became one of the most known sculptors at that time: Statue of Coronel Henry Montgomery in Memphis (Tennessee), Fort Dearborn Massacre Monument in Chicago and Iowa State Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument in des Moines, statue of Benjamin Franklin to the world exhibition in Chicago, 1893. In 1895, he made his masterpiece: the national monument of General W. T. Sherman, the White House in Washington. It was finished 1910 after his death by Lauritz Jensen, Stephan Sinding and Carl J. Siddende unge mennesker (Sitting young people) 1942, Dronning Louises Bro, Copenhagen. Artist, sculptor Johannes Hansen (1903-1995). The sculpture was revealed during the German occupation of Denmark, and Copenhagen’s mayor Bindslev said that they were “thinking about the future - with seriousness and with comfort. Many will be able to mirror their own seriousness and comfort in life”. Whilst the newspaper Politiken wrote that they “ seems rather sad with its dull symmetrical composition and its moodless immobility; one imagines inevitably that the young girl sits and comforts her friend in his unemployment”. The bronze statue was of course from Lauritz Rasmussen Broncestøber.
