Just the other day, I was talking to a prospective client about niching their audience down to speak to their prospective customer across their marketing. I explained that you need to to be so clear on your customer, you can name them, age them and tell me what keeps them awake at night and where they dream of going on holiday.

They weren't happy about this. Their concern was that unless they 'spread bet' across their marketing and spoke to every single possible type of customer, from the occasional gift buyer who is 50 to their core audience of 25, they wouldn't make any money.

They're wrong, and this is why.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you try to dilute your message so it has mass appeal, it actually has the opposite effect - you end up shouting into the abyss and nobody is listening. Getting super clear on your core customer (the one that will make the bulk of your profit, not the occasional shopper) you will hit the mark every time, with your marketing, product/service development and every thing else from your window display to your website. Be so clear on who your customer is, that when you're creating (product or content) you know exactly how your customer will react. Think - what would Sarah comment on this? What would Steve say if he saw this on my homepage? Wil Nicola click through on my website and immediately check-out? If you don't know the answer or the answer is negative, then you've totally missed the mark and you need to start again.

SEARCH ENGINES ✨ To come up in searches on places like google, you have to get down with SEO. This basically means identifying key words and using them (strategically) in the pages and posts on your website. This is a big topic for me too... so I look to pros like Sarah over at @thewebsitedoula (she's the bomb).⠀

There are many ways to help your clients find you rather than you searching for them. Start with engaging. It's the easiest way to say hello and guide people on over to your little space on the interweb.⠀
