Roll out the red carpet. Meet the show-stopper and famous fungus known as mycorrhizae. When mycorrhizae take the stage in thriving soil, there is a biological tango of give and take created. Cue the music… Plants take excess sugar produced in the leaves through photosynthesis and send it to the roots. From here, mycorrhizae are able to absorb it to sustain themselves. The sugar from the plants keeps the mycorrhizae fed and alive. In turn, the mycorrhizae bring nitrogen and phosphorous back to the plant. This dance is critical to soil health. This spectacular living web, interconnecting organisms within the soil, is shattered when two things happen: Soil is tilled - a common practice industrial farms use to mechanically agitate the soil Chemical herbicide planting systems are used for annual commodity crops, like Roundup Ready soybeans and corn. On the other side of the root, regenerative farming gives a standing ovation to no-till practices and mimicking nature through holistic management which allow mycorrhizae to do what they do best, weaving their magical web deep in the soil to support that living web. Soil anchored to the earth by roots resists depletion, and feeds nutrient rich food. . . . . . . #rootweek #livingsoil #roots #soilhealth #soilscience #mycorrhizae #rhizobia #rhizosphere #regenerativeag #allofustogether #farm365 #regenerativeagriculture #sustainableagriculture #supportsmallfarms #supportsmallandlocal #sustainablefarming #permaculture #loveyourfarmer #farming #sustainableagriculture #farm365 #farmlife #sustainablefarming #climatechange #marketgarden #fourseasonfarming #growyourownfood #organicgarden #farmersfootprint

Healthy soil is under attack. It's not only tilling that destroys the root systems and living web of soil. Big Ag has been moving away from tilling for decades now and has moved to no-till chemical herbicide planting systems for annual commodity crops, like Roundup Ready soybeans and corn. Day 3 of The Secret Life of Roots takes us into the largest threat to our root systems. Growing annual corn, soybeans, and wheat over so many millions of acres--whether one uses chemicals or not--is destructive to prairie-savannah ecosystems, and a disastrous replacement for the deep, variegated, perennial and annual root systems of the prairie. Shallow rooted annual commodity crops are not able to sequester carbon, build soil organic matter, or infiltrate water like native grassland - savannas. We simply cannot do this to such vast ecosystems and expect ecologically sound or economically just results. Photo: Soybean and corn farm in Kentucky taken by Nicole Erwin, Ohio Valley Reserve. We are taking you to the underbelly of the farm this week. We will be looking under the hood of the farm’s surface and digging deep to share the secret lives of roots and some deeply rooted facts about why roots are so important for soil health and the forces currently threatening their invaluable role in agriculture. This week we will cover the superpowers of roots including mycorrhizae, rhizobia, rhizosphere and the current threats to the underground network of roots responsible for healthy, anchored soil, carbon sequestration, nutrient-rich foods and more. Welcome to root week. Let’s dig in. . . . . . #rootweek #livingsoil #roots #soilhealth #soilscience #mycorrhizae #rhizobia #rhizosphere #regenerativeag #allofustogether #farmlife #farm365 #regenerativeagriculture #sustainableagriculture #supportsmallfarms #supportsmallandlocal #sustainablefarming #regenerativeagriculture #permaculture #loveyourfarmer #farming #sustainableagriculture #farm365 #farmlife #sustainablefarming #climatechange #marketgarden  #fourseasonfarming #growyourownfood #organicgarden #farmersfootprint

Saturday, September 14, 9:30-4:00 Polyface Farms in partnership with @zachbushmd guru of soil and gut microbiome fame, invites professional wellness practitioners and their families and staff to a day of encouragement, inspiration, and education. Too often folks on the periphery of the healing arts find ourselves marginalized and ostracized by the pharmaceutical and institutional orthodoxy. If you practice acupuncture, aromatherapy, essential oils, herbology, chiropractic, naturopathy, homeopathy, nutrition therapy, fitness coaching, frequency modulation and other fringe therapies as a professional, this is a day of support, friendliness, and encouragement. And yes, licensed medical doctors are welcome too. Excellent picture showing the importance of biodiversity in agriculture. There are plants that can cast their roots deeper than others and can get nutrients where others can not. Then, using the complex microbiome system of the roots, these plants pass the nutrients surplus to each other. In addition, through the release of exudates by the roots created by the process of photosynthesis, they attract to the rhizosphere a community of microbes that seek food in these same exudates. So it begins to form a food chain between these microbes (bacteria, fungi, nematodes, protozoa, etc.) whose excretions will make various nutrients bio-assimilable by plants. This symbiosis between plants and microbioma is fundamental for its existence and development. It is worth reading this article in Nature magazine talking about this whole process: https://www.nature.com/scitable/knowledge/library/the-rhizosphere-roots-soil-and-67500617 #agroecology #agroforestry #soilhealth #regenerativefarming #organic #organicfarming --------------------------------------- Imagem excelente que mostra a importância da biodiversidade na agricultura.
