Next weekend I get to go Into the Woods with @laphil at the @hollywoodbowl! This is my all time favorite show, performed by a cast I could only dream of, wearing Ann Hould-Ward’s original broadway costumes. It’s an absolute dream come true for me to see! Today I got to preview the show and chat with a few of the performers! You can see those chats on my story right now, and I’ll make a highlight! In this post you can find a video where @patinamiller can be heard absolutely perfecting “Children Will Listen”. I consider it an absolute privilege to see this cast make history with performances that will surely become iconic. As you can tell, I’m passionate about this show! If you would like to join us opening night for 30% off by using code “ONCEUPONATIME”! I’ll share a link in my story as well! Naturally I wore my this forest print blouse, and a perfect trio of pins (although the treble clef is hidden by my bow!) #intothewoods #atthebowl #hollywoodbowl #musical #theater #theatre #sondheim #childrenwilllisten
Ben Platt certainly knows how to sing a song, how to make it contemporary, and how to make it his own. I am ecstatic to see a budding trend of Broadway music on the Grammy Awards. This exposure is great for our art form and will hopefully add to the already booming growth in Broadway audiences. Of course, anytime these sort of “updated” versions get sung there are people who will complain. “They’re ruining the musical and destroying Broadway. Let’s go back to the Golden Age!” To those individuals I dedicate this small history lesson.⠀
⠀
It is easy to forget that for a great deal of Musical Theatre history (basically since its inception) show tunes and popular music were one and the same. It was through Minstrelsy, American Variety, Vaudeville, and Revue shows that America gained its national music scene. With the rise of the radio, the most popular songs were covers from Broadway musicals. By the time Rodgers and Hammerstein were crowned the kings of Broadway, the musical had become so popular that a special evening dedicated to the works of these two men was shown simultaneously on all three television channels. Record labels were investing in musicals simply for the opportunity to record, sell, and distribute cast albums. Not only was this music popular, but it was also profitable. ⠀

So what happened? What changed and when? ⠀

Bernadette Peters is one of the greatest singing actors of our time and quite possibly in the history of Musical Theatre. This song is from Merrily We Roll Along by Stephen Sondheim and gives us a perfect example of why SUBTEXT is absolutely critical when acting a song. Like most of Sondheim’s pieces, this one offers a great challenge. Throughout the entire song, but especially at the end, the lyrics are incredibly repetitive. In fact, the last minute only includes a few unique words, “day after day after day after day,/’til the days go by,/’til the days go by...” repeated over and over again. When Bernadette Peters performs this song it leaves us a sense of longing, sadness, despair, and maybe just a touch of hope. I am convinced that a performance by a lesser actor would not automatically do the same. ⠀
⠀
So, how do we handle incredibly repetitive songs? How do we perform them in a way that makes people WANT to watch them over and over again? The actor’s job is to dive deep into the subtext of the song. The subtext is the words left unsaid, the true meaning underneath the sung text. It is easy for subtext to get skipped as we are so busy focussing on the notes, the dynamics, and making sure the song sounds great. However, no matter how great you sound, a beautiful song is not complete until it is truthfully performed. A great exercise to help you dig into subtext is to physically write it out piece by piece. Break the song down line by line, or phrase by phrase and then write the words your character wishes they could say. Write out their truth, or at least the truth as you interpret it. This might line up perfectly with the intent of the lyric, or it might completely contrast......⠀
