Mandela Bridge, Johannesburg.
I love this city. There’s something so special about it that I struggle to articulate. Its potential excites me. As I sit and edit content from the last few months I am realising over and over again that consistency is key to just about everything... from building a city and growing relationships to simply running faster and capturing stories better. Maybe if we got better at being consistent we’d build more bridges and less walls. #johannesburg [: @brandonhinton.jpeg]
Recently I’ve been reflecting back on my time in South Africa and just how diverse and beautiful this country is. I must admit that before I went on this trip, I had quite a narrow view of the country. I had visited a few years earlier to volunteer at a children’s home, however my experience was limited to being inside a gated community in a dodgy part of Johannesburg and visiting an unethical “safari” park that clearly mistreated its animals.
This time around, I got to see a whole different side of South Africa. It involved getting up close and personal with safari animals that roamed freely in a nature reserve, surfing on a stunning white-sand beach, kayaking through dramatic canyons, ziplining through ancient rainforests, hiking through the mountains, camping under the stars to experiencing the buzzing metropolis of Cape Town.
This trip also helped me to gain a much deeper understanding of South Africa as a country. This included a more in depth understanding of the economy. One driving factor of South Africa’s economy is the diamond industry, which is actually one of the largest diamond industries in the world.
This got me thinking… We always hear that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but what about the relationship between diamonds and the country that produces them? While there are two sides to every story (and I believe it is imperative to do your own research to come up with a balanced view), I was interested to learn some of the positive impacts that the diamond industry is having on the local communities in South Africa. Leading diamond producers create US $16 billion of net benefit, nearly 60% of which flows back into local communities. Whether it is clothing, electronics or jewellery, it is important to know the impacts of the industries we buy into, both positive and negative, so we can make informed purchasing decisions!
