This is incredible. This is a miracle. This is Stockton in therapy, partially standing, with some support from a bench (because his legs are contracted) and some support from his therapist. He’s holding his head up better than I have ever seen. His spine and hips have been really bothering him lately, but not in this moment. In this moment he’s laughing, he’s playing, he’s BOUNCING WITH A BALL. He’s being a kid. A goofy, toothy little 4 year old kid. My eyes felt like they were deceiving me, watching my little boy just be a kid. Not “special needs,” not a “medical mystery,” not “terminal,” not anything but a 4 year old boy playing with a ball. I haven’t told very many people about this, but this picture makes me feel like I should share. For the past couple of years I’ve had this reoccurring dream of Stockton. Perfectly healthy. I’m trying to get him ready to leave the house, and he just will NOT listen. He runs to one side of the couch, and when I get over there he runs to the other side. Laughing his head off he just keeps yelling, “can’t catch me mama! You can’t catch me mama!” I don’t know why, but I’ve always felt like this dream is giving me a window into his silly little personality, and I wake up grateful every time I have it. I look at this picture and I can’t stop crying. We’ve always seen his silly little personality, but I look at this picture and I see the boy from my dream. Maybe I’m crazy, I don’t know, but my heart is so full. His quality of life has always been our number one priority. Our little boy has always fought hard for his life.. and it is moments like these where I want to print 1,000 copies of this picture to show to every doctor, nurse, and person who has tried to convince us that his life doesn’t have value. He’d have lost his fight years ago if we had listened. But we didn’t, and here he is. Here he is, just a boy and his ball. A boy who is, by the grace of God, about to turn FIVE YEARS OLD.
