Jeri Ward was only 30 years old when she had a life-altering clot-provoked stroke. She had a headache for five consecutive days with no relief. One evening, she was sitting on the couch with her husband, when she felt a loud pop and heard a fizzing sound in her head, similar to firecracker. It was followed by extreme dizziness and blurry vision. She was unable to move or speak for several seconds, and once she did, her words made on sense: Jeri was terrified. She got to the hospital ten minutes later and was diagnosed with blood clots in the frontal lobe of her brain. Doctors told her ten minutes longer may have been too late. . Today is a big metaphorical milestone for me. Exactly 6 months ago, I learned I had survived a pulmonary embolism. Things didn’t really hit me until my hematologist came into the exam room and said, “We’re really glad that you’re still here with us.” He told me that a Pulmonary Embolism is one of the leading causes of sudden death, and almost 1 out of 3 people who have one, won’t survive it. I never considered myself as a person who feared death, but I suddenly couldn’t not think about it. . I’m eternally grateful to my support system of friends and loved ones that have been there for me. It’s been an uphill road. Some days it feels like there’s an elephant sitting on my chest and a knife stabbing my side. Most days it’s still a struggle to breathe normally. There were times where I thought I wouldn’t be able to exercise again. I’m EXTREMELY happy to say that I celebrated my 6 month “clot-versary” with a morning workout! I’ve pushed past the fears and anxieties (and let’s be real...the pain), and decided that I can’t live my life in fear of dying. . . March is Blood Clot Awareness Month and approaching in just a few days. Out of everything, I’m extremely grateful for the online community of survivors who have raised awareness, and shared their knowledge and positivity through their own experiences. So many nights I’d be laying in bed, unable to sleep, Googling every symptom/scenario under the sun. It’s thanks to other people’s posts and shared stories that I was able to begin living my life again free of the anxiety that my clot would kill me. So, I’ll complete this little celebration with a quote from Game of Thrones that means a little something extra to me... . “What do we say to the god of death?” . “Not today.”

Thank you to @bostonbookfanatic for bringing awareness to something that affects more people than most realize! 900,000 people are affected by blood clots every year! 100,000 die from blood clots each year! I don’t really get personal on my page, but this is something that I live with. So, this is my story... My story began when I was 19 years old. I was having blinding headaches and was tired all the time. I remember my Mom telling me to stop being so lazy at times. Little did she know I was driving to college every day and at times I had no clue how I even got there. Finally, my primary doctor ran a battery of test and everything was inconclusive. Everyone was stumped while I continued to get sicker by the day. One night I had gotten out of the shower when my whole left side went numb. I started screaming because obviously I was freaked out beyond belief. I was rushed to the ER where I saw a doctor who told my Mom I had a sinus infection. He gave me a shot and told my parents that I would be asleep before I got home. I didn’t sleep for the next two weeks. My Mom has to help me walk, feed me, bathe me, etc. I finally told her, “I think I have a brain tumor and I’m dying!” My doctor ran with this and ordered a CT which showed abnormalities. I was rushed 2 hours from home to a neurosurgeon and he said I needed a neurologist instead. They did an MRI and I had 3 blood clots on my brain. One was 6 inches long. They also realized that when I was going numb I was actually having small strokes. I was rushed to the hospital where I spent 10 days. It took me months to start to even feel like a normal 19 year old again. Knowing that I was so close to death woke me up and gave me a new lease on life. My story doesn’t end there, though. When I was 38 years old, I had been feeling off for a few weeks. Just rundown and not myself. I woke up one morning and my chest hurt so bad I just knew I was having a heart attack. I woke up my hubby who rushed me to the ER. We live so close that calling an ambulance would take longer. They didn’t even triage me. They got me in a room and hooked me up to the monitors. Then, ran lots of tests and did blood work. (Continued in comments)

Story Time: Six years ago, I ended up in the hospital with two blood clots, one in each lung. At the time, I was ONE WEEK AWAY from running ‍♀️ the Philly Half Marathon for which I had been training heavily . When I went to the doctor’s office, I had no symptoms (aside from an unexplainable sensation in my shoulder‍♀️). My vitals were amazing, and even the doctor thought nothing was wrong, but to be safe she had me get an X-Ray which essentially saved my life. Today is the end of Blood Clot Awareness Month, and I can no longer let this month pass without sharing my story. Three weeks prior to ending up in the hospital, I started using a birth control (the Nuva Ring) which was the cause of the blood clots. THREE weeks on this medication put me in the hospital for a week and on blood thinners for the next six months. This post is NOT about the medication‍♀️; it’s about being aware of what we’re putting in our bodies and LISTENING to the way we feel‼️I felt off, and I went to the doctors even though I was in the “best shape” of my life. FYI: The second pic is me in 2012 after running the Broad Street Run for the first time. Health isn’t about how you look; pay attention to how you feel. #happysunday #goodmorning #quotestoliveby #stoptheclot #bloodclotawareness #bloodclotsurvivor #health #womenshealth #blackwomenshealth
