Scientists in Tanzania have found a new way to search for helium in the ground based on its lightweight and non-reactive qualities. Because of its wide range of uses and extremely slow rate of natural formation, there have been occasional helium shortages across the globe. It's our pleasure to introduce Martino Edoardo. Edoardo is a Materials and Nanotech Engineer. Following his passion for quantum mechanics and superconductivity, he started a PhD in solid state physics at EPFL in Lausanne (Switzerland). His research focus on the study of optical and electronic properties of complex electronic materials, such as high temperature superconductors, topological insulators and 2D materials. For his experiments he uses some of the most advanced scientific instruments, available only in few laboratory worldwide, such as: synchrotron light sources, Ion-microscopes for microfabrication and extreme high magnetic fields (1’000’000 stronger than Earth magnetic field). When not working in the lab, or planning the next experiment, he is working on his science communication project (@science_apero). You Guys! I just submitted the manuscript for SuperConductors! My book about the most important career skills for an unknowable future. I’ve been working in this book project for over two years. Hundreds of books, articles, and interviews went into it. I could probably spent my whole life refining it and making it better, but the publisher set a hard deadline and now it’s out of my hands and with the production team. Much like its group 2 pals it is a soft shiny silvery metal that reacts with air and water. . It’s reactivity with air means it can be used in vacuum tubes to remove traces of air. They are marketed as air “getters”. . The pure metal is found in nature but it is not extensively used. It forms a component of drilling fluids for oil and gas wells and is also used in paint and glass making. . Barium-containing compounds are generally toxic, with the exception of barium sulfate (BaSO4) which is used for treating digestive disorders. Its used as a contrast agent of visualising a patient’s stomach and intestine on X-ray. . Barium carbonate (BaCO3) is used as rat poison ☠️ and barium nitrate (Ba(NO3)2) gives fireworks a green hue. Although barium is found in one species of algae, it has no known biological role. . You may have seen demonstrations of levitating magnets. These are YBCO superconductors made of yttrium, barium and copper oxides. . A superconductor is a substance that has zero electrical resistance⚡️ – i.e. doesn’t lose any electrical energy running through it to heat energy – and emits a powerful magnetic field as a result of this property. .
