First time watch and watching for “Master of the East: Takashi Miike Week” as part of the @letterboxd Season Challenge 2018-19. Miike is a prolific Japanese director with over 100 directing credits to his name and his films are characterised by their provocative nature, often containing extreme sexuality or violence. AUDTION is Miike’s best-known movie internationally and so what better place to start experiencing his filmography. AUDITION begins as a tame domestic drama, which follows Aoyama (Ryo Ishibashi), a reserved TV producer and recent widower, as he begins to look for a new wife after his son tells him he looks unhappy. Aoyama sets up a series of fake auditions to find his perfect woman and cast her as his wife. He falls for Asami (Eihi Shiina) a cripplingly shy ex-ballet dancer with a dark and tragic back-story. Here, roughly half way through the movie, Miike has completed his set-up and is ready to gleefully pull the rug out from under the audience and turn the story into a full-blown horror. I went into AUDITION aware of its reputation with horror fans and knowing that, at some point, things are going to get pretty crazy. What I wasn’t expecting was how much time and care Miike takes on the first half of the movie in setting up the two main characters and their awkward love affair. Clearly the film is always going to be remembered for half 2, but I would have happily continued to watch the romantic-drama version of this movie as presented in half 1. Inevitably a sizeable amount of shit does hit the fan and the movie turns truly sinister and deeply disturbing – and it is glorious. Miike reveals the true horror of Asami’s past and how that fuels her real motivations for dating Aoyama - that motivation being diabolical torture, the depiction of which caused audience members to vomit, faint etc. when originally released in cinemas. Extreme but masterfully handled, Miike leaves an air of ambiguity hovering over proceedings as he shows Aoyama waking up as if it were a dream – is Asami’s brutality real or are we watching the manifestations of a man’s fear of women.
