Girder Bridge Heads to Eaton Socon Substation

From Port Sutton Bridge, Lincolnshire to St. Neots, Cambridgeshire, Collett’s team delivered a 170 Tonne Hyundai transformer to Eaton Socon Substation.

With the transformer arriving at Port Sutton Bridge Collett’s team carried out all port services including stevedoring, lift plans, crane hire and CPA Contract Lift by mobile crane, discharging the 8.6m L x 4.91m W x 4.75m H cargo from the hold of the vessel to our Scheuerle girder bridge.

African Road Transport Record set by Mammoet in Nigeria

Mammoet has successfully and safely received and transported the majority of heavy refinery components for the project. This includes a 3000-ton regenerator, which is the heaviest item ever to be transported over a public road in Africa. Upon completion, the Dangote Refinery will have the capacity to process 650,000 barrels of crude oil a day.

Mammoet received the cargo at the new Dangote Quay Lekki, which was specifically built for the project. The components, ranging in weight and dimensions, were either received from the ship’s hook onto SPMTs or directly loaded off from Ro-Ro vessels. They were then transported over a 10-kilometer route. Once on site they were placed into storage on freshly paved Enviro-Mat, Mammoet’s innovative and sustainable solution for ground reinforcement, which is also being used to provide the main crane hard stands.

The 3000-ton regenerator measures 56 meters long, 23 meters wide and 25 meters high. It was offloaded from the ship by roll off method using 108 axle lines of SPMT in 3 x 36 lines configuration and then safely transported to the site. Similarly, a 1673-ton reactor, measuring 44 meters long, 16 meters wide and 17 meters high, was transported using 78 axle lines in 3 x 26 lines configuration.

Lifting and installation of the refinery equipment will commence later this month. To optimize the construction process, Mammoet has drawn on its diverse fleet of equipment. This includes SPMTs, and mobile and crawler cranes ranging in capacity from 250t to 1250t. Mammoet will also have its largest super heavy lift ring cranes onsite – the PTC 200 DS and PT 50 – to bring maximum efficiencies to the execution of the project.

Challenging route completed with innovative bridge engineering and Trojan trucks

ALE has negotiated steep gradients, bridges and other challenges to complete the transportation of two transformers. From the port of Inverness, the transformers, weighing 193t each, were transported along a complex route to Tomatin Substation in Scotland, UK, where they were successfully installed.

The transportation was performed using ALE’s AL34 girder frame with 24 axle lines of conventional trailer, two Trojan trucks and an additional prime mover. There were numerous structures on the route, including three onsite bridges, and ALE selected this equipment to reduce the axle loadings, enabling safe transportation over them all.

All the bridges were assessed during the planning stages to ensure they could support the transport loads. However, the capacity of one bridge could not be sufficiently determined and therefore an efficient alternative had to be found. ALE’s creative solution was the installation of an overbridge. A crane needed to be positioned a suitable distance from the centre of the bridge, so ALE utilised a 100t capacity mobile crane to install the 12m bridge raft over the bridge’s 9m span.

Another challenge on the route was the range of steep gradients, both up and downhill, that the convoy needed to negotiate. ALE transported the transformers over gradients of up to 14% and this was further complicated by road surfaces made up of loose materials. It was an opportunity for the Trojan trucks to demonstrate the strength of their capacities as they operated at their maximum gradient.

ALE transported the transformers over 35km before installing them at the substation with the operation being completed in 12 days. ALE’s innovative solutions and the unique abilities of the Trojan truck ensured that this challenging operation could be completed as efficiently as possible.

Hornsea Two Installation Contract Goes to DEME

DEME Offshore has been awarded a major contract for transport and installation work on Ørsted’s Hornsea Two wind farm situated 90km offshore from the East coast of England.

The new contract follows the DEME Group work on the neighbouring Hornsea One wind farm. The Hornsea Two 1.4GW wind farm will have 165 monopiles, transition pieces and Siemens Gamesa 8.4MW turbines to install.

Pile driving operations and transition piece installation will be carried out by the Orion DP3 offshore installation vessel, the new DEME Offshore flagship due to enter their fleet by the end of this year. This vessel will have a Liebherr HLC 295000 crane with 5,000t lifting capacity. The turbine installation work will be carried out by their installation vessels Sea Challenger and Sea Installer.

The installation work, estimated value > €200 million, is planned to be completed by the end of 2022.

Footbridge on the Move by M.J. van Riel

M.J. van Riel recently transported a 60 ton heavy bridge section from its production hall. Thanks to good preparations and the use of the right equipment, this large 34-metre-long bridge section could be manoeuvred perfectly out of the warehouse. This section is only one part of a larger project.

The first phase of the work involved jacking up the bridge section. After it had reached the correct height, our autonomously driven, modular axle lines could be steered under the bridge section. Then the sliding doors of the production hall were opened and there was just enough freedom of movement to drive the whole thing out and turn onto the road.
⠀
Once outside, the bridge section was unloaded off the axles and loaded onto a transport unit using hydraulic spring systems. After this the load was ready for transport.

This work was part of a larger project. M.J. van Riel will be assisting in the transport of four bridge sections in total, ranging from 9 to 34 meters long (all 5.5 meters wide). From the production hall they transport each section of the bridge to a second location, where they will be spraypainted. At a later time, the bridge sections will then be transported to their final destination, in order to place them with one of our heavy telescopic cranes. Furthermore, a third party will carry out the final assembly, resulting in a brand new pedestrian bridge.

In order to seamlessly connect all parts of this process, their project office works closely with the client. In this way they ensure that every work is well prepared and that the planning is right down to the last detail.
