Dear New Teachers, IT WILL BE OKAY. This was me sitting at my desk in my classroom before school started my FIRST year of teaching. Even though this wasn’t THAT long ago, I look at this picture now and I can’t help but laugh & smile (and tear up a little bit). The furniture in my room was set up in a way that made no sense & was a terrible use of space. I covered my walls in posters that are essentially wall paper and left little room for anchor charts. 3 of those things on my desk would later be broken by students (unintentionally) because of where I put them. I thought a lot of things about teaching that would later be proven VERY wrong. I had NO idea that over the course of the year, I would sit at that desk & cry no less than 50 times. I didn’t know 90% of what I know now. This picture STILL makes me smile because I’ve come to realize that I HAD to be that teacher in order to be the teacher I am today. And I’ll have to be the teacher I am today in order to be the teacher I will be in 5 years, 10 years, & 20 years. Teaching (ESPECIALLY your first year) is a learning experience. One of the best things about our job is that we get to learn every year, & we get the opportunity to change & start fresh with a new group of kids EVERY YEAR. If you’re not changing AT LEAST one thing every year, then you’re not doing your job. No one has it 100% right. No one is perfect. We’re all human. Take a deep breath, & remember that you HAVE to be your first-year-teacher-self in order to become the teacher you strive to be. Make mistakes, be messy, be silly, laugh, cry, cry some more, take note of things that work & things that don’t work, & love your kids with your whole heart. You may feel like a hot mess, & that you have NO idea what you’re doing, but your kids will love you just the same. Be positive & don’t be afraid to let out your first-year-teacher energy & excitement. Kids feed off of energy. It’s OKAY if you don’t have it all together. It will all come together in time. Keep changing & keep growing. One day you’ll look back at your beautiful, sweet, naive first-year-teacher-self and see how far you’ve come. #myfirstclassroom #firstyearteacher #madeinfifthgrade
