Mother's Day, as we know it, became an official holiday in 1914, thanks to a woman named Anna Jarvis. The seeds for Mothers Day were planted by her mother, Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis in the 1850s. She organized the Mothers Day Friendship Club, in order to help the poor and sick. When the Civil War broke out, members of these clubs nursed soldiers from both sides. When she died, Anna promised to bring her vision of peace to life. Her vision of Motherhood extended beyond the home, into the public sphere. Women were becoming more active in all arenas of life, and many of them were Mothers. The original intention of Mother's Day was to restore the status of the Mother as the cornerstone of the family AND the nation- a day for organized social and political action by ALL mothers. It was originally Mothers Day, but the apostrophe was moved and it became Mother's Day- a day to celebrate the private service of ones own mother. Anna Jarvis spent her life rallying against the commercialization and sentimentalization of it, and came to regret her role in helping the holiday come to be. The original intention was lost, and political action was replaced by flowers and brunch.
