Here we go! I’m starting The 90 Shark Project with a ray, because spotting my first ray whilst snorkelling in the Mediterranean (and thinking it was the greatest thing I had ever seen) kick-started by obsession with all things living underwater. Somewhere I still have the keyring I bought from a market stall as my souvenir, a fabric stingray with ‘Corsica’ embroidered on the side So, 1: Blackchin Guitarfish, Glaucostegus cemiculus Once common in the Mediterranean, the Blackchin guitarfish is now listed as an Endangered species on the IUCN Red List. Guitarfish are one of the most threatened families of sharks and rays; their flattened body shape gives them incredibly large fins, targeted by the fin trade. The Blackchin guitarfish can grow to over 2m in length – and its fins fetch up to 150 Euro per kg. Living in shallow water, above sandy or muddy substrates, the Blackchin guitarfish will bury itself in the sand. It eats shrimp and crab with its wonderfully triangular snout... #the90sharkproject #guitarfish #endangeredspecies #ray #sharks #conservation #illustration #underwater #mediterranean #snorkelling #diving #oceans #drawing #ceramics #porcelain

2. Daggernose Shark, Isogomphodon oxyrhynchus So no prizes for guessing how this shark got its name... Found along the shallow, mangrove-fringed coastline of South America, individual Daggernose sharks seem to spend their whole lives within a particular area, not appearing to make any long-distance migrations. Reaching a maximum length of 160cm, the Daggernose shark is one of 50% of all shark species to reach an average size of 1m+. Whilst not targeted by fisheries for its meat or fins, the Daggernose shark has declined by over 90% in the last 10 years due to accidental bycatch in gillnets. The species is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. #the90sharkproject #daggernoseshark #shark #savesharks #saveourseas #endangeredspecies #underwater #mangroves #criticallyendangered #lovesharks #illustration #clay #porcelain #drawing

3. Basking Shark, Cetorhinus maximus The Basking Shark is the second largest fish in the world, second only to the Whale Shark Growing to 12m, it is by far the biggest shark found in cold-water, and is a seasonal visitor to British seas, yay! ☺️☺️ Arriving along our coasts between May and October each year, you’re most likely to see one “basking” in the sun at the surface, swimming along with its huge mouth wide open, filter feeding upon zooplankton and tiny fish. In British seas, the Basking Shark is strictly protected. Once a commercially important fish, now the Basking shark is a well-known ambassador for the protection of our seas. It's been a while since a shark, I've been researching my next species and can't wait to illustrate them! But for now, this guy 6. Borneo Shark, Carcharhinus borneensis When you think about the wildlife of Borneo, do you immediately think Orang-utan? Maybe you know about the Borneo Pygmy Elephant or the Sumatran Rhinoceros. But had you heard of the Borneo Shark? Borneo is home to an incredible number of species, including many found nowhere else in the world. Endemic species total 44 different mammals, 37 birds and 19 fish species - one of which is this very rare little shark. The Borneo shark is an inshore, coastal species, so rare that only five confirmed specimens are known. Virtually all details of its biology and life history remain a mystery – it has not been studied since 1937! #the90sharkproject #shark #sharksneedlovetoo #facts #borneo #wildlife #oceans #illustration #clay #porcelain #ceramics #drawing #endangeredspecies #sharks #conservation #marinescience #mystery

4. Whitespotted Izak, Holohalaelurus punctatus (What a name! Holohalaelurus?!! ) This is the smallest shark I’ve ever made! With a tail less than 1cm wide and a total length of about 18cm, this little guy is 1/2 the size of a real Whitespotted Izak. Found in deep water 200-400m from the surface, the White Spotted Izak has only very occasionally been recorded during research surveys. One specimen was found in 2007, and another in 1972…! Only two populations are thought to exist, one off the coast of South Africa and Mozambique, the other off Madagascar. Common in fishing catches during the 1960s, the species is now listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. But already, new favourite tiny shark ☺️ #the90sharkproject #savesharks #endangeredspecies #deepsea #shark #protectwhatyoulove #oceans #conservation #marinelife #marinescience #saveourseas #illustration #porcelain #drawing #ceramics #clay

6. Angel Shark, Squatina squatina Angel Sharks look like rays, although they are 100% shark, promise! This is a young angel shark, its body is covered in net-like markings and black and white dots. Baby angel sharks hatch from egg cases whilst still inside their mother, allowing them longer to develop before being born into the ocean, where they will immediately have to fend for themselves. Less than 30cm in size at birth, they can grow to over 2 metres as adults. The Angel shark is a nocturnal species and during the day they can be almost impossible to spot! Individuals lie buried completely in the sand, using their broad pectoral fins to dig themselves in. The Angel shark is critically endangered – the Canary Islands are one of the only places you can now find them. I’ve been working on something new… The 90 Shark Project is something I've created for myself to highlight just how little we know about sharks and their closest relatives – the rays, skates and chimaeras. There are over 500 species of shark, but can you name 90? I know I’d struggle! I’ve chosen to represent 90 species for a very simple reason. Across the world’s oceans, shark populations have declined by 90% during my lifetime. I’m 28 years old. My idea is to try and make visible some of the shark species that get overlooked. Everyone knows white sharks, hammerheads and whale sharks. I’ll represent them as part of The 90 Shark Project alongside other species that are so little known, and so rare, that they might disappear before we get the chance to find out anything more about them. There will be deep-sea dwellers, sharks that live in rivers (yes, rivers) and sharks that have only just been discovered. 90 individual porcelain sharks, rays, skates and chimaeras will be created for the project. Each will be illustrated by hand, and I will learn and share as much information about each species as I go.
