To be honest, it took us awhile to figure out how we felt about DJ Shadow's "The Mountain Will Fall." It's so wildly restless and inconsistent, it's near impossible to settle in with. Some tracks *cough cough Three Ralphs cough cough* serve as little more than grating filler. Others, such as his Nils Frahm collaboration "Bergschrund" just don't seem to fit in with the album as a whole. TMWF comes across as unsure of what it wants to be. But when it hits, it hits hard. "Depth Charge" has an action packed cinematic scope. "Ashes to Oceans" (featuring Matthew Halsall) is a triply jazz track brimming with emotion and thoughtfulness. "Pitter Patter" accomplishes the eerie, cool, driving musicality that this album seemingly was aiming for. And of course, the stand out single with Run the Jewels, "Nobody Speak," is just straight fire (even if it doesn't quite fit in). Ultimately, this is better served as a small selection of favorite tracks played from an iPhone than a proper vinyl record (seriously, we cannot get past "Mambo" quick enough) but it's not without its bright spots. We popped open a bottle Soave Classico DOC from Ca'Rugate Monte Fiorentine last night, something that's been sitting neglected in our wine fridge for roughly a year now. While we've been interesting in trying it, we always decided on something else before it. We were quite pleasantly surprised with what we got! It's kind of a Goldilocks wine -- not too acidic, not too earthy, not too fruity but juuuust right. It's loaded with notes of green apple and peach with a complimentary mineral finish. A super solid wine we wish we had more of.
