Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1st pressing) For the few of you who know me in real life, you already know that this is one of (if not the) most important albums of my entire life. I grew up in the 80s and 90s and found myself with a crappy entry-level guitar after discovering I was bad at every other childhood activity. I spent a few years pretending I could play all of Siamese Dream until I actually started learning how to play. When Mellon Collie came out, I was already infatuated with this band and I have all of the cringeworthy spiral notebooks full of doodles, terrible lyrics, and tributes to Smashing Pumpkins to prove it (but you’ll never see them here). This album came out at a really pivotal time in my childhood and every time I hear it I am taken back to that time when I still felt an unbridled range of emotions about what the future might be and who I’d be in it. I never wanted to be a rockstar, but I so badly wanted to be in this band, maybe standing somewhere near James Iha playing my stratocaster just like Billy and refusing to look at the crowd just like James. We’re all familiar with the parade of singles that came from this album and while many find it cool to trash on what Smashing Pumpkins have become in their later years, this album was one of few that I remember EVERYONE liking. The popular kids loved Bullet With Butterfly Wings, the prettiest girls in my grade liked 1979, the pre-goths and angry folks loved Zero, the future English majors (and myself) loved Thirty-Three, and seriously fucking everyone and their mother loved Tonight, Tonight. You can certainly tell me that none of these songs meant anything to you, but you may as well not because I wouldn’t believe you anyway. What a stellar, unparalleled album.
