The Upsetters are a Kingston Jamaica reggae/dub group who became the house band for Lee “Scratch” Perry’s production studio, Black Ark. They began playing together in 1969 as Gladdy’s All-Stars, though many members of this group went on to join Bob Marley & The Wailers. In 1972 Perry recruited the remaining members of the All-Stars and they became his backing band, playing on almost every Black Ark production throughout the 70’s. Cloak and Dagger was released in 1972, originally on Upsetter Records in Jamaica and then on Black Art Records internationally. A perfect example of Perry’s insanely innovative dub recording techniques, this album was a collaboration between Perry, Tommy McCook, and Winston Wright, as well as the core Upsetters backing band. Low-key, bass-heavy instrumental dub at it’s finest, with spacey backwards tape-looping effects and Perry’s trademark vocal intros; this stuff would be heavily influential especially on British punk and post-punk bands like The Clash, Bauhaus, The Slits, etc. I found this 2001 repress at Mississippi Records in Portland OR over a decade ago.
