Some of the most exciting snorkeling I’ve ever done- watching sailfish hunting sardines this past January off the coast of Mexico. #sailfish #gamefish #hunting #fish #mexico #islamujeres #sardines #baitball #feeding #behavior #snorkeling #scubadiving #underwaterphotography #underwater #nikonusa #nauticamhousings #conservationorg #conservation #world_wildlife #worldwildlifefund #natgeo #wildaid #oceana #saveourseas #thewcs #saveourseasfoundation #oceanconservancy #naturephotography #nature_org #pelagic
Data collected at all of Nouabale-Ndoki National Park's research sites are now captured electronically using hand-held or tablet computers and apps that have been specially designed for the purpose. At the Mondika Gorilla Project trackers who have worked with the gorillas for more than 20 years and have developed invaluable knowledge of gorilla behaviour are now being trained to collect data using the hand-held data units. One of the main objectives with the new technologies and data collection methods is to allow for greater collaboration across the sites around Nouabale-Ndoki (Mondika, Goualougo and Mbeli Bai), to allow for greater cross-fertilisation of ideas and a more standardised approach to data collection.

Elephants are highly intelligent, social animals. Across much of their range they are being killed at unsustainable levels principally to fuel the ivory trade. Today is World Elephant Day, a day to reflect on the plight of the giants of our forests and savannahs, raise awareness and take a stand to make a difference for their future.

The past year has seen some significant advancements in our projects in the Republic of Congo. We were involved in the creation of a new national park in the Bateke Plateau, worked with the Congolese Government on the adoption of its National Action Plan for Elephants, and in Nouabale-Ndoki National Park the law-enforcement team brought some significant elephant poaching kingpins to justice. read more about our 2018 highlights in our latest blog post - Link in bio.

Nouabale-Ndoki National Park’s law-enforcement team are applauded by local communities for bringing heavily armed elephant poachers to justice, and returning calm to their forest home. Four poachers responsible for killing elephants in the periphery of the Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park were sentenced to five years’ imprisonment by the local district court last Thursday. Leonard Beckou, the gang leader, is a repeat wildlife crime offender, having been arrested twice before in 2015 and 2016. His latest poaching raids were conducted close to local villages, sparking fear within local communities, and highlighting the negative impact of elephant poaching and the ivory trade not only on elephants, but also on people. This most recent conviction is a tribute to the bravery and professionalism of the Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park rangers, the strong partnership with local communities and authorities, and the growing resolve of the Republic of Congo’s justice system to tackle threats to the country’s wildlife. Conservation of wildlife requires the active support of local people. Ensuring that families tangibly benefit from the protection of wildlife populations is key to garnering support and building a local constituency for conservation. Finding ways to improve the wellbeing and secure the cultural identity of traditional and Indigenous Peoples is a challenge everywhere. In isolated places like northern Republic of Congo families have limited access to markets, lack social services like schools and health clinics, and have few opportunities for employment. It is not surprising that some local people hunt and sell wildlife when the price of a kilogram of antelope meat is 20 times that of the plantains they grow in their fields. One benefit of the Nouabale-Ndoki National Park, which covers four thousand square kilometres of pristine rainforest in northern Republic of Congo, is that it serves as a source of wildlife that move into community hunting areas on the periphery. But demand for wildlife as food in provincial towns like Ouesso and Pokola is growing placing increasing pressure on the wildlife in some community areas. In this ever evolving context the forests in the buffer zone of the NNNP are being exposed to new threats, often as a result of factors far from the park’s boundaries. If wildlife is depleted in the forests surrounding the park traditional families will lose a vital source of nutrition and cultural identity, and hunters might be motivated to enter the Park. To ensure that hunting remains sustainable in community areas bordering the Park, the Nouabale-Ndoki Foundation is working with over 1,500 people in Bomassa and Makao, the two closest communities.
