"If we wonder, "Well how come the Buddha's not always helping us?" I think the buddhas are trying but we aren't very receptive sometimes. Like when our mind is twirling around in afflictions, the Buddha may be trying to communicate and we're totally out to lunch. This is why we do Vajrasattva retreat, to purify a lot of those kind of obscurations. And also why we meditate on lamrim and thought training—to reduce the power of the afflictions so they don't take over the mind so much and so that we can be more receptive to the buddhas' awakening activities.” —Ven. Thubten Chodron

"It's very helpful when you're in a bad mood or upset about something to do the taking and giving meditation. Even if you see that it's your own mind spinning around creating the problem, still, do the taking and giving meditation and think of all the other sentient beings whose minds are spinning around, creating problems, but who are totally unaware that it's their afflictions. Think of the people who are very unhappy, not because of external situations but because of the way they look at the situations, the stories they tell themselves. And so with compassion, think that you take on all that misery and then give them your happiness in the form of your body, possessions, and merit. That's very effective for rebalancing your mind, bringing it to a more neutral state, and for helping to accept our own situation and really think about others with compassion. Then, motivated by compassion, to generate bodhicitta.” —Ven. Thubten Chodron

"Whether we're remembering the past or anticipating the future, it's all a projection of our mind. It's our conceptual mind making stories. We want to be really aware when this starts to happen because we so easily confuse what we're thinking about when we're conceptualizing with the actual object and then we have all this emotional turmoil going on. So when we notice our mind is doing that, we want to bring ourselves back to what's happening right now and not get so lost in our thoughts. It's quite interesting—if we take life moment by moment in that way, every moment can be good.” —Ven. Thubten Chodron

"Our motivation is the most important aspect of what we do. It's primarily our motivation that determines the value of our actions, whether they're wholesome or unwholesome, virtuous or non-virtuous, constructive or destructive. So paying attention to our motivation is very important. In doing so, we may discover all sorts of things about ourselves that are not so pleasant. We may discover motivations of greed, retaliation, being shut down and not wanting to listen to anybody, withdrawing. We may find motivations that lead us to keeping ourselves the busiest of the busy, doing all sorts of things that don't really need to be done but that we make important in our own ways. As Dharma practitioners, when we begin to see those things, instead of despising ourselves or criticizing ourselves or feeling disheartened by this, we can say, "Good. Now I see this and can do something about it."

"Why are we suffering? Because we're grasping at something that is simply an imputed name as having some meaning from its own side. And therefore we suffer because, 'This is mine. That is theirs. That is yours. And I want to control it all.' And it doesn't work, does it?" —Ven. Thubten Chodron

"Really think about how much we receive from other living beings. It's amazing. None of us could survive without each other and without all the other living beings around too." —Ven. Thubten Chodron

Geshe Yeshi Lhundup taught at Sravasti Abbey on great compassion: “Great compassion is spontanous, not just emotional. It is developed through the practice of seven fold cause and effect or exchanging self and others.” ##thubtenchodron #sravastiabbey #buddha #dharma #buddhadharma #kindness #compassion #love #joy #peace #happiness #equanimity #nonviolence #wisdom #meditation #monastics #tibetannun #tibetanmonk #tibetanmonastic #community #monastictraining #sangha #integrity #dailyquotes #motivationalquotes
