Today at @usacycling Enduro Nats, my 55% younger, 75% better protected, 50% more deeply suspended, 110% sendy-er teammate and I looked like two riders from different races--if not different planets. Apparently this never happens anymore--somebody wearing cycling clothes to a downhill race. I was heckled a little. I was thanked by a genuine few. I rode my heart out against many more talented and less awkward looking guys. And I finished 10th. Here is my @giantfactoryoffroadteam Trance Advanced 29er setup from the @porttoportmtb ! I made a few small changes to make it a little more ‘XC’ for the week of pedalling rather than full blown ‘Enduro’ spec. For starters I upped my PSI front and rear in my @ridefoxbike suspension to have a stiffer pedalling platform. And most of the time I kept my rear DPX2 shock in the lockout position. I swapped my usually DD/DH casing @maxxisbike Assegais for EXO casing Ikon tyres front and rear at 26/28 psi. I lengthened my @pro_bikegear stem from 45 to 60mm and dropped my stack height down 10mm also. I used a 34T front ring on my @shimanomtb 12 speed drivetrain paired with the 45-10 rear cassette and mid cage sized rear derailleur. I ended up removing my @mrpbike chainguide purely to save a little weight and make sure I had maximum pedalling efficiency. And I swapped my usual @htcomponents T1 enduro pedal for the XC style M1. These small changes made the bike a little more pedalling biased but allowed me to keep the fun feeling of the Trance on the Descents. All of which helped me get a 3rd on the second day of racing around the Killingsworth singletrack. Happy days!! In case you missed it the brand new @giantbicycles Trance 29 has been getting rave reviews everywhere recently. It has just won the coveted @bicyclingmag Gear of the Year award with them saying “you can attack descents and carry insane speeds for a bike with only 115mm of travel” and @flow_mtb describing it as “a short travel bike that punches way above its weight; we found ourselves going just as hard on the Trance as we were on far bigger bikes and it felt fantastic.”
