I’m a proud descendant of enslaved Africans in the United States. No — not proud that they were enslaved like millions of others then and now — but proud because the fact that I am alive today means that strength is encoded in my DNA; that perseverance, love, and hope makes up every part of me. It was given to me by my ancestors and I will pass it on to my future generations. _______________________________________ I visited the Whitney Plantation while in New Orleans. It’s located an hour outside of the city and is the only plantation museum that is designed to solely share the narratives of those that were enslaved. While standing on that soil, I felt the energy of my people. I read about horrors that I couldn’t fathom, but I left with the understanding that it takes a special kind of power to keep moving, to keep living, and to survive through generations. _______________________________________ My ancestors come from central Nigeria and Cameroon. Because of the erasure of identity that occurred during slavery, those are the only details I know. They were then forcibly brought to Eastern Alabama where they worked on cotton plantations. Over the generations, they migrated to Columbus, Georgia where they started a life after slavery (a few of them are still in Alabama). My father, Roger Williams, enlisted in the army and worked himself out of poverty. He then moved to Atlanta, was offered a white-collar office job, and bought a home. He’s the first one in his lineage to do so. I’m the first one in my lineage to attend college. And I hope my children accomplish more than I ever will. My family’s story is about breaking boundaries and flourishing with each generation. What’s yours?

During our trip to Spain, a couple of years ago, we road-tripped from Malaga to Gibraltar and back in one day. That particular stretch of coast is called Costa del Sol (Sunny Coast) and a little into Costa de la Luz (Coast of the Light) as you get into Gibraltar. We had stopped for lunch in Estepona, a cute little town with an awesome Brazilian restaurant. We spent the afternoon in Gibraltar after driving around for 30 minutes trying to find parking, then scaled the rock of Gibraltar that is ran by mischievous monkeys who will try to rob you. There are signs letting you know NOT to bring plastic bags on the hike. The monkeys WILL try to take it from you. I saw a woman being harassed by the monkeys until one managed to steal it away from her. The rules are up for a reason, follow them! Gibraltar’s history is long and complicated and it is worth a read if you’re a history buff. Gibraltar has served as a strategic military point for centuries (now for trades and cargo). Being historically Spanish land yet controlled by the British, has created a bit of friction and varied opinions among the Spanish, Gibraltarians, and the mainland English, specially now with the controversial BREXIT. Although they do accept Euros, we decided to leave a little early and check out Marbella, a destination for the wealthy. Marbella is stunning with its beautiful antique buildings, beaches, and history. Marbella is amongst the municipalities ranking highest in household disposable income per capita in Andalusia, second to Mojácar. We managed to make it back to the house, take a shower and party until early morning - Definitely a productive sightseeing day and highly recommended road trip in my book.

There is nothing selfish about pursuing a life that makes you wildly excited about Monday mornings. Anybody who tries to tell you otherwise isn’t the kind of energy you should be surrounding yourself with. I hope you have a wonderful week ahead - Randomly stumbled across this beautiful lesser known temple when I spent over an hour walking from one side of Chiangmai to the other in search of the best Khao Soi. It was so beautiful, I came back then next day for some photos! @lalo_pop1
