Our first and last plywood trug which we hang out with the road sign. Some UK truggeries make all their trugs from plywood - it's cheaper and frankly easier too so we can see the appeal. But for us it misses so much of what we enjoy about trugging i.e. growing and/or working with locally sourced and milled wood. Our latest batch came from someone just down the valley who had had a poplar fall down in the wind. A bit of messing around with trucks and a visit from our local miller and the wood is now drying in our old car shed. Trugs can be beautiful decorative objects if oiled or stained but we also think there is a beautiful integrity to the old garden workhorse. These trugs are left largely to their own devices and only need bringing in out of the rain. This is Tony's mum's 20 year old trug - worked to the bone, never pampered and still going strong. Sometimes owners of very old trugs get in touch, usually to buy another for their son or daughter. The oldest we've heard of still in use came out from England after WWII!
