It feels a bit backwards to be sharing a post on how to transplant herbs FROM the garden to a pot, but here we are! I found a multitude of mints and lemon balm that had overwintered in our herb garden and were ready to find their way into our farmhouse. I’m sharing on the blog how to properly transplant these beauties for your own home. Mint makes a wonderful fly and other insect deterrent by doors and windows Link in profile to read! #UATRgarden
Loves! I'm so excited to share my new blog post with you! One of our favorite spots to check out in the spring is the local Amish run greenhouse! We’ve been coming here since we moved to Iowa, even before I knew how to start my own plants or how to identify the many types. This year walking through feels different; it reminds me how far we’ve come! Are you greenhouse shopping this year? #UATRgarden
Dealing with leggy plants? This happens when your newly planted seedlings are not getting enough light! While this can be prevented altogether, that is not always an option. What do you do when it happens to you?
In today's blog post I am sharing how to correct leggy seedlings, or how to transplant your plants from one container to a larger one. There are a few tricks that you should know so that you can have success!

Here we are, another year without a professional greenhouse! It certainly makes operating a small vegetable and flower farm interesting. Just because you have a great social media following doesn’t mean your business or life is perfect! Our farm is currently in a state of “make it work!” We are entering Year 2 - we don’t have all of the supplies and fancy tools that many of these other farmers who have been market gardening for a decade have. So we make it work, and I think sharing that reality can really make a difference in inspiring someone else’s journey.
So what do you do without a commercial greenhouse, grow lights, and heat matsYou fill up your dining room, of course! This has been an excellent method using a rolling cart, I must say. I am sharing a few seed starting ideas without a greenhouse on the blog today if you care to stop by. If anything it’s an ode to “you don’t have to have the fancy tools to grow your own food” and all that jazz Link in bio! #UATRgarden
We have jumped on the seed starting train! The snapdragons, asters, digitalis, stock, celosia, eryngium, and dianthus are in and sprouting. Next on my list is peppers, cabbage, and chard. Yum! We are using all @johnnys_seeds this year (and no this is not sponsored!) because of our success with their awesome seed in years past.
If you are a newsletter subscriber, I just sent out a seed starting guide to all of you. It has information about getting started, links, and information about the upcoming classes I’ll be teaching at Kirkwood! If you want to subscribe head to www.underatinroof.com and I’ll send out another round of emails this evening #UATRgarden
Want to grow your own food this year? Don’t forget that we are selling Plant Sets this year! Pre-order now and get a head start on the garden of your dreams. Check out our sets on our website
Is there anything better than picking out a fresh set of transplants for your spring garden? This year we are offering Plant Sets for pre-order with our own homegrown edible plants. You can choose from three different sets (container, raised bed, or backyard plot) that are structured to fit your plot needs. Each set comes with specific varieties and types of veggies/herbs! You can read about each set in detail on our website - just look under the Plant Sets page! Sets start at $40 and would make a great addition to your home. We are growing heirloom, organic, and non-GMO seeds from @johnnys_seeds. This is a great way to support our farm and help us pay for upfront spring costs instead of getting a CSA Share! Have a question? Let us know in the comments! #UATRgarden
As a first time gardener, one of the unknowingly hardest parts of growing my own food was figuring out how to deal with the harvest and actually use all of it.
The first year I ever produced my own vegetables I wasted a lot of them! They ended up rotting in the fridge and being tossed to the chickens or on the compost pile, or rotting directly in the garden because I didn't need them at that moment.
It took some time for me to figure out what eating seasonally really meant, and what it all came down to was: creativity in the kitchen and learning how to preserve my harvests.
Today on the blog I am sharing how I deal with meal planning around the garden! Click the link in profile to read #UATRgarden
